BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES

Senior Football

We welcomed Na Piarsaigh to Ballysteen Sportsfield on Saturday afternoon for our Round 2 County League fixture. Like our challenge match last month, this match was full of attacking open football resulting in eight goals being scored throughout the 60 minutes between the sides.

We started brightly and had the first of our goals as Shane Gallagher palmed the ball to the net after good build up play throughout the pitch as we moved the ball quick and sharply through the lines. Following a slow start, Na Piarsaigh grew into the game as they kicked a couple of frees before scoring their first goal of the game. Our response however, was emphatic as Danny Neville hit a thunderous shot to the roof of net on our next attack. Both teams traded further points before the half time whistle to leave the score line Ballysteen 2-4 Na Piarsaigh 1-5.

The second half continued in the same vein as both sides continued to attack. Shane Gallagher continued to cause havoc anytime the ball went into him and scored two more goals to complete his hat-trick. Luke Gammell kicked the point of the match, arrowing his shot into the breeze straight over the crossbar. We continued to press home our advantage as Maurice Somers rounded off our goal scoring with a neat finish. This advantage gave management opportunity to use their bench with Paul O’Shaughnessy, Alex Ryan and Kevin Barry all getting on the field for their competitive debuts. Na Piarsaigh battled gamely until the end and saw their efforts rewarded with two more goals in the second half, but we ran out winners on a full-time score Ballysteen 5-12 Na Piarsaigh 3-11.

Do It for Diarmuid

Recently, former player and friend Diarmuid Barron was diagnosed with cancer upon returning home from New Zealand. This news has shocked everyone associated with the club, but we are determined to support Diarmuid and his partner Jenna through this time.

Last weekend, a number of events took place as the community joined together for a Weekend for Diarmuid. A bucket collection during our County League match versus Na Piarsaigh raised €720. The Club wishes to thank everyone for their generosity in supporting Diarmuid as all funds raised will go to supporting him throughout his treatment.

National League

Well done to William O’Meara on making his full NHL debut for the Limerick Senior Hurlers last weekend in their Quarter Final victory over Laois. William started at corner back and played the full match as Limerick ran out comfortable victors. A semi-final against Dublin or Tipperary awaits Limerick in a fortnight.

Best of luck to Billy Lee and the Limerick Senior Footballers who travel to Wexford this Saturday for their National Football League Round 6 clash. Throw in is at 2pm.
