BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Senior Football
Our Senior Football campaign came to an end on Sunday afternoon after we were beaten by defending champion Adare, 1-9 to 0-8 in Senior Football Championship quarter-final the Bog Garden. In terrible conditions, we had the first score of the day with Cillian Ferris breaking through the Adare rearguard before slotting over. Adare responded with the next four scores, three coming from frees to hold a 0-4 to 0-1 lead at the waterbreak. David O’Shaughnessy had our second score after 25 minutes but three more frees helped Adare into a 0-7 to 0-2 advantage at the break.
O’Shaughnessy had the first score of the second half but Adare replied with a free of their own. Disaster would strike for Ballysteen after 38 minutes as a slip in our defence allowed Adare in for the games only goal. That moved the champions eight points clear but to our credit, we dominated the remainder of the contest, limiting Adare to just one more free, their seventh of the day. Luke Gammell kickstarted the fightback with a brilliant score out on the wing. Two from O’Shaughnessy had it back to six. Willie O’Meara kicked a monster score to further reduced the deficit with Pakie Moran’s effort brining it to 1-9 to 0-8. But time was against us as the referee blew his whistle shorty after that score to end our season.
Huge praise must go to the team who performed so brilliantly on the day, leaving everything on the field.
