BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Senior Football
Our Senior footballers are in action this Friday night when we take on Adare in a West Senior Football Championship Quarter Final. We have been success in this competition over the last number of years winning it in 2017 and 2013 and following our positive start to the County Championship this match will present another challenge to mark ourselves against as we take on the defending two-time County Champions. Throw in at the Bog Garden is set for 7pm. Best of luck to all players and management involved.
11/05/2019 versus Adare. Throw In: 7pm. Venue: Bog Garden, Rathkeale.
Junior B
Our Junior B’s had their first run out of the season last Saturday, when we hosted Athea. Despite starting the game slowly and conceding three goals in the opening period of the match, we battled to a draw in a highly competitive and entertaining encounter. Played in ideal conditions we had a number of outstanding performances throughout the field with Caolan Rushe and Kevin Walsh leading from the back and Pakie Neville and Dervan Gallagher posing a threat up front. Jamie Moran scored our first goal just before half time with a precise finish into the corner of the goals. At half-time we were down two points and the scoreboard read Ballysteen 1-6, Athea 3-2.
The second half saw us gain a foothold on the game with our defence becoming a lot more tighter forcing Athea into shots from distance. However, the game was very much tit for tat with scores coming at a premium. Jeff Duggan produced a stunning 45 to bring the minimum between the teams. Athea responded with a couple of pointed frees to leave them ahead by three points as the game approached injury time. Then Pakie Neville produced a moment of magic when he orchestrated a move from deep giving and receiving the ball on a number of occasions before slotting the ball into the corner of the net from outside the 21 to draw us level, bringing his personal tally to 1-03 for the afternoon. We pressed hard for a winner, but it was not to be as the referee blew for full time the result was a draw on a scoreline of Ballysteen 2-10 Athea 3-7.
Thanks to everyone who togged out for this game, numbers were tight given the Bank Holiday weekend but the spirit and determination bodes well for the season ahead. Our next match against St. Senan’s is set to be played in a couple of weeks and details will be confirmed of a fixture in future club notes.
Team: Alan Kehoe; Maurice Hayes, Cathal Anglim, Caolan Rushe; Kevin Walsh, Evan O’Donoghue, Anthony Ryan; David Holland, Paidi Vaughan; Patrick Neville, Declan Ryan, Jeff Duggan; Jamie Moran, Glenn O’Donnell, Dervan Gallagher. Sub: Paul Doyle for Anthony Ryan.
Premier Minor Football Championship
Our Minor footballers started their campaign last week when we made the trip to Childers Road to face Claughaun. We made a bright start and scored three goals early on in the match to give us a healthy advantage. At half time the score was 3-7 to 1-3 with our goals coming from Paul O’Shaughnessy, Sam Duggan and Tomas Sheahan.
Claughaun battled back bravely in the second half and as we entered the last quarter they had restricted our attack to just two points and reduced the deficit to seven. However, we powered on in the last quarter to score a further three goals with Sam Duggan and Paul O’Shaughnessy both grabbing their second and Luke Gammell rounding off the goals with the last play of the game.
The full-time score was 6-10 to 2-9. This was a fantastic opening to our campaign that was a complete team display, well done to everyone involved. There is now a break in championship until after the Leaving Certificate is completed. Further details of future games will be posted in our club notes and our social media channels.
