BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Senior Football Championship
We played our Senior Championship Semi Final since 2012 on Sunday afternoon. Facing a a familiar opponent in Ballylanders, Danny Neville was a notable absentee from the starting lineup due injury. The opening period saw a chess match unfold with Ballylanders holding the majority of possession but with Ballysteen’s ability to counter and win frees saw us lead at the water break by 2 points. Ballylanders took control following the water break scoring four points, Ranahan kicked another free to leave between the sides at half time. Ballysteen 0-4, Ballylanders 0-5.
The second half saw Sean Whelan introduced in place of Jamie O’Sullivan, Danny Neville was soon to follow replacing Shane Hallinan. Ballylanders continue to hold a point lead through the third quarter and extended it to a two point advantage at the water break. At that stage the scoreboard read Ballysteen 0-6, Ballylanders 0-8. John O’Shaughnessy replaced William O’Meara at the break however, the key score came for Ballylanders. Recovering possession in the middle of the field, they sweeped up the field with their corner forward finishing to the back of net. It left us with a mountain to climb in the last quarter with six points between the sides. Darragh Ranahan and Shane Gallagher had chances to reply to Ballylanders goal, but through sheer last ditch defending and bad luck, the ball didn’t manage to cross the line. We kept battling away trying to reduce the deficit but it was not to be. Ballylanders emerged victourious on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-09.
It was not the result that was hoped for, however, our players and club can take solace from the Championship campaign. We will look forward to 2021 with renewed hope that it might finally be the year to bridge the gap.
