BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Senior Football Championship
Well done to our Senior Footballers who reached the semi finals stage of the Championship for the first time since 2012 with a fantastic win over Fr. Casey’s last Saturday.
Played in beautiful sun drenched conditions at Newcastle West, we made the quicker start with a number of early points from play from Shane Hallinan, William O’Meara and Jamie O’Sullivan. Fr. Casey’s responded with two points, one from play and one pointed free. At the water break, the score was five points to two in our favour. The second period of the first half saw the game become more even and Mark Ranahan converted his second free before Casey’s replied in kind to leave the score 0-6 to 0-3 in our favour at half time.
Fr. Casey’s started the second with more attacking intent on their play with two early points reducing the deficit to one. Mark Ranahan extended our lead again with another pointed free to leave the score at 7 points to 5. Both teams exchanged points from play before the water break, with Danny Neville notching his first of the encounter. Two points separated the sides at the water break and changes to our side before and during that break saw John O’Shaughnessy, Sean Whelan and Conor Enright introduced. O’Shaughnessy would contribute to one of the scores of the game following a long build up which seemed to have stalled, John weaved in and out along the sideline of the uncovered stand before hitting a right footed effort that found the target. At that stage we had pressed our two point advantage at the water break out to four and we would continue to press home our advantage with Patrick Moran and Darragh Ranahan popping points over from around the D. Bill Casey’s barnstorming run through the centre of field before being tripped up summed up his and the team’s outstanding performance throughout the final quarter. Danny Neville tapped over the bar to seal a 6 point victory.
Well done to everyone involved for a fantastic performance. We can look forward to a semi final in the Championship next weekend, with fixture details to be confirmed in the coming days. Keep an eye out on our social media accounts for further details.
