BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Limerick Senior Football Round 3
We played Newcastle West in our final group game of the reformatted Championship on Saturday night knowing that qualification to the knockouts was still not assured following our draw with Drom/Broadford in Round 2. The first half was dominated by play that can be best described as attritional, as the battle for dominance in the middle third reigned supreme with very little attacking intent on show. Scores were at a premium and as half time approached there still hadn’t been a score from play. Our best moment of play in the first half came on the stroke of half time when Cillian Ferris collected the rebound from a John O’Shaughnessy effort and gave the ball to Danny Neville whose goal bound shot struck the post. Newcastle West countered up the field and registered the first score from play and extended their advantage to lead by 3 points to 1 at Half Time. Ballysteen’s opening score came from a Mark Ranahan free after James O’Meara was fouled.
The second half saw Newcastle West get off to the best possible start when a flowing move from the throw in resulted in the opening goal of the game. Darragh Ranahan reduced the gap with a fine left footed effort. Disaster would strike again, however, when the full back line failed to deal with the dropping ball and the resulting scramble ended up with the ball hitting the back of our net leaving us 8 points behind with some 20 minutes to play. Fresh faces were introduced into the team with Declan Guerin, Sean Whelan and William O’Meara after this and at the water break, the scoreline saw us 9 points behind, 2-5 to 0-2. Tomás Sheahan came on for his debut and scored a lovely point off his right foot within minutes of his arrival. Two further pointed frees from Ranahan brought us closer to Newcastle West on the scoreboard but the result was inevitable as the clock ticked towards 60 minutes. A final point from Newcastle West left eight points between the sides on the full time whistle. The result ensured qualification to the knockout stages and a Quarter Final clash against Fr. Casey’s.on September 20th where a massive performance will be needed following this disappointing result.
