BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Limerick Senior Football Championship
Result
Ballysteen 2-9
Drom/Broadford 1-12
We began our Championship on Sunday afternoon against Drom/Broadford in Newcastle West. Knowing a win would seal our qualification to the last eight, we started brightly and rushed ahead in the early minutes thanks to 1-2 from Danny Neville. The goal came after good build up play from captain Cillian Ferris and Mark Ranahan. Drom eventually settled and got on the score sheet courtesy of their full forward but our full forward, Shane Gallagher replied with a great right footed effort. Scores were traded between the sides and James O’Meara scored from distance to leave us ahead by four points at the water break. The second quarter again saw Neville pose a threat to the Drom defence and was denied a second goal when his shot was tipped over by the goalie. Frees at the other end managed to keep the scoreline tight and at halftime we still held a four point lead, 1-7 to 0-6.
At the start of the second half, both sides traded scores with James O’Meara providing his second point before Danny Neville, picked up the loose ball, drove towards the endline and played a beautiful dinked ball towards the onrushing John O’Shaughnessy who fisted it to the Drom net. That left the score 2-8 to 0-7 in our favour. Mark Ranahan would point from play before the water break and as we approached the final quarter, we held a seven point advantage (2-09 to 0-8). Drom to their credit showed all their battling instincts in this final quarter and began to close the deficit steadily. This was no doubt helped by the black cards suffered by William O’Meara and Alan McGrath in the final quarter. Drom continued to push forward and reduced the gap to a goal and as the game approached injury time, they were rewarded with a penalty. Derry McCarthy slotted the penalty into the bottonm left hand corner and the game was tied. We had once last push up the field in search of a winner but Neville’s effort sailed away wide with the wind and the game finished level. Disappointment no doubt, following a superb first 50 minutes of football from our lads. However, all is not lost as our faith is in our own hands and a positive result against Newcastle West next weekend will see us qualify to the knockout stages.

Best wishes to our team captained by Cillian Ferris and managed by Seamus O’Donnell for the upcoming Championship campaign. A lot of hard work has gone in pre and post lockdown and hopefully this will bear fruit in the coming weeks. Thanks as well to Cagney’s Bar who sponsor our new jerseys which will see competitive Championship action for the first time.
Junior B
We renewed rivalries with Knockaderry last week in our first Junior B Championship match of 2020 after being defeated in the West Final replay by our opponents last year. Knockaderry made the brighter start and showed more match sharpness throughout the game to run out eight points winners in the end on a 2-7 to 0-5 scoreline. However, we saw some great performances from Dan Fitz in goals, Sam Duggan in the forwards and were unlucky not to add to our total throughout the 60 minutes. Thanks to all who togged out and donned the green and gold.
