BALLYLANDERS GAA CLUB NOTES
SENIOR FOOTBALL
Our senior footballers will contest the 2020 county final on Sunday October 4th in a repeat of the 2018 final where they will face Adare after a convincing victory over Ballysteen last Sunday in Newcastle West. As in the previous game vs Monaleen a second half goal by Danny Frewen was the crucial score in what was a tight affair up to that point. Scores in the opening quarter were at a premium as Ballysteen dropped players back making it hard to get ball into our forwards & at the first water break a single Ciaran Kelly point was all we had to show to Ballysteen’s three points. The next quarter was the Jimmy Barry Murphy show as he kicked four points to leave the scores at the break 0-5 to 0-4 in our favour.
Our forwards were finding more space in the second half & Eoin Walsh was winning an amount of ball & was laying it off to oncoming players such as Brian O’Connell & Danny Frewen who put us two points ahead. Steve Fox & Killian Meade were busy up & down the flanks while Shaun Moloney kept the centre back area under control. Ciaran Kelly added his second of the day to leave the scores at the second water break 0-8 to 0-6. Jimmy Barry kicked a free before Danny found the back of the net in the 20th minute after some great work from Eoin O’Mahony in midfield to break up a Ballysteen attack. The last quarter was very stop start as Steve Fox & Tom O’Dywer had to be replaced because of injury resulting in nine minutes of injury time been added on. Jimmy Barry kicked his sixth point of the game heading into injury time & this was followed up by Osin Brown & a monster of a free kick from Kieran O’Callaghan sealed the victory on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-9. Credit goes to everyone involved with the panel for this victory, Declan O’Connor in goal made some vital saves near the end when Ballysteen were trying very hard to get the goal they needed while the full back line of Pa Holian, Steve Walsh & Donal Kelly were rock solid.Mark O’Connell & Eoin O’Mahony did trojan work in midfield while our half backs & forwards worked selflessly up & down the field. Danny,Eoin & Jimmy caused the Ballysteen defender’s problems all match. Now the attention turns to Sunday as all roads lead to the Gaelic Grounds where hopefully Jimmy Barry Murphy will be collecting the Fr Casey Cup at full time.
