Athea GAA Club Notes:
Club Result:
County U20 A Football Championship- Group 2 Round 2
Shannon Gaels Athea 3-10. Ahane 0-12
Our U20s had a home match last Saturday in Round 2 of the U20 A Football Championship against an Ahane team who had a big win in their first match against Claughaun last Thursday. This was a must win game as a defeat to Ahane would leave us out of contention for the knockout stages.
After a lot of overnight rain underfoot conditions were tricky. We performed much more fluently than we did last week and were competitive right throughout the first half. A goal from Billy Hogan being the turning point in the half. The sides went in at half-time level on a scoreline of 1-04 to 0-07.
In the second half, we performed even better and were getting stronger as the game went on. A further goal from Billy Hogan and a Michael Walsh well taken goal gave us the cushion needed to get back to winning ways and to be in with a chance of reaching the semi-final if other results go our way.
There were 11 Athea players involved in this game and the improvement in the younger players is very evident and bodes well for next year. The final score was 3-10 to 0-12.

Sympathies:
The club would like to offer its sympathies to the Enright family on the passing of Ned last week. Ned was a member of the 1963 County Junior Winning Team and was described by those who remember him as a player, as a tall commanding defender who marked hard and tight and who in a physical era used his height and strength to great effect.
