Woodlands House Hotel County Junior C Football Championship- Semi-final
Athea 1-9 Patrickswell 1-7.
Athea overturned a sluggish first half to claim a two-point victory over Patrickswell in a tightly fought semi final contest in Mick Neville Park on Sunday. After trailing for most of the opening period and even missing a first half penalty, we produced a determined second-half rally, capped by a decisive goal from James Broderick, to seal a deserved win.
Patrickswell started the brighter, taking early control of possession and the scoreboard. Despite three early wides they built a three point lead by the tenth minute.
Athea had a golden chance to swing momentum back their way when we won a penalty as James Broderick was fouled in the area in the 14th minute, but the keeper made a diving safe from James’ placed attempt. James got our first score which was followed up by a point by Alan Kelly to narrow the gap to a minimum. Patrickswell then struck a goal in the 21st minute, extending their advantage and putting Athea under pressure.
David O Connor added a point and Gavin Ambroses goal attempt hit the post before Patrickswell kicked two further points to go five ahead nearing half time.
Aidan Curry put over a free before half-time to leave the halftime score 1-5 to 0-4.
The restart saw us dig deep and our supporters really got behind the team throughout the second half. We narrowed the gap to two points by the 50th minute as James Broderick added one and Aidan Curry added three further frees while Patrickswell struggled in that period registering just two points.
Our substitutions in the second half added further experience to the team as Neilus Hunt and Mike Reidy helped hold possession and stem the pressure from an onslaught from the Well who tackled throughout with intensity giving us very little time with the ball. There were strong challenges throughout with bruises to show for it for those involved.
The turning point arrived in the 52nd minute, when James Broderick pounced to bury a goal that pushed Athea ahead for the first time in the game. From there, we held our nerve and and defended resolutely to hold Patrickswell scoreless in the last 12 minutes.
The Well had three late frees from scoring distance to pip us but failed to hit the target with each. A key moment saw Jamie Collins emerge from a crowded goal mouth with ball in hand having intercepted a goal bound shot from the third free. This capped a great display from this young man who is one to look out for in the future.
A late Curry free stretched the lead to two points, enough to close out the match on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-7. Martin Chawke gave a very solid display throughout and worked tirelessly in midfield showing great leadership to those around him.
There was great cheers from our supporters at the end of an enthralling game as we reach our second County Final this year when we meet South Liberties on Saturday November 8th 2025. All the best to the Team and to John Hunt and his Selectors in the upcoming final.
