Athea GAA Club Notes:

Club Result:
Woodlands House Hotel Premier Junior A Football Championship Group 1 Round 5
Athea 1-8 Monagea 3-13
On Sunday last we met Monagea in Newcastle West in Round 5 of the Premier Junior A Championship in a game where a win was a must. A strong and clinical Monagea side however proved too much for Athea in a tough encounter, pulling away in the second half to claim a comprehensive victory.
Both teams started brightly in an evenly contested opening quarter. Sean Ryan opened Athea’s account with two points as we traded scores, before TJ Hunt added a further points from a free to edge us ahead for the one and only time in the match.
Midway through the half, Monagea struck the first major blow with a goal to move into a six-point lead. We responded when Evan Curry finished to the net from distance over the keepers head, bringing the sides back into contention before the break. The halftime score was 1–6 to 1–3 with Monagea ahead.
Athea came out battling after the restart, Andrew O’Riordan and Sean Ryan picking off early scores but Monagea quickly regained control, firing over two quick points before striking for a second goal that gave them a commanding lead.
A third Monagea goal midway through the half effectively sealed the contest, stretching their advantage. Athea continued to fight, with Sean Ryan adding three excellent points from play, but Monagea’s accuracy and depth told in the final stages.
They closed out the match strongly, adding late points to run out comfortable 3–13 to 1–8 winners. It proved to be a disappointing end to the season in a game where Athea had no answer to a very efficient Monagea team who now advance to the Quarter Finals.
Team: Gerard Ahern, Eoin Sheahan, Tommy Quaid, Sean Twomey, James Hunt, Andy Ahern, Eoin O’Shea, Evan Curry (1-0), Tadhg Ahern (0-1), Brian O Connor, TJ Hunt (0-01f), Andrew O’Riordan (0-01), Jonathan Fitzgerald, Dylan Griffin, Sean Ryan (0-6)

Woodlands House Hotel Junior C Football Championship Group 2 Round 5:
Glin 1-11 Athea 1-15
There was excitement to the very end as Athea battled past Glin in a hard-fought clash that went right down to the final whistle. All square at the break, Athea produced a spirited second-half display to claim a deserved three-point victory and now advance to the Quarter final of the Junior C Championship.
Glin started brightly, striking early points to move 0–3 to 0–0 ahead within the opening five minutes. Conor Fitzgerald got Athea off the mark from a two pointer, before Rory Cleary, Aidan Curry with two frees and Jason Kelly added fine efforts to go four points up.
However, Glin responded in style with a well-taken goal from play just before the 20-minute mark to tie the game again. Both sides traded scores to the interval, leaving it Athea 0–9, Glin 1–6 at half-time. David O Connor came on before halftime and was quick to score and did so again early in the second half.
The restart saw Glin stretch their lead to three points with a strong spell, but Aidan Curry hauled Athea back into contention with a free before blasting home a goal from play on 45 minutes to put his side in front for the first time since the opening quarter.
From there, Athea grew in confidence. James Broderick struck two fine points from play and Gavin Ambrose added another from the left as the home side pushed ahead. Despite Glin’s late pressure, a string of wides proved costly, and Athea held firm to secure victory on a final scoreline of 1–15 to 1–12. Michael Tierney gave a powerful performance at the back and kept Glins talisman very quiet throughout. There was a blend of experience and youth in the team with Jack Sexton and Jamie Collins doing well and getting further valuable gametime at this level. Our next game is in the quarter final against Ballinacurra Gaels on Saturday October 25th 2025. Team Tomas Ahern, Jack Sexton, Philip Daly, Cillian O’Connor, Jamie Collins, Conor Fitzgerald 0-2,1x2pt, Michael Tierney, Michael Walsh, Gavin Ambrose 0-1, Ger Collins, Dan McMahon, Rory Cleary 0-1, Jason Kelly 0-1, James Broderick 0-2, Aidan Curry (1-6,1tpf, 4f) Subs: David O Connor 0-2 for Dan McMahon, Neilus Hunt for Rory Cleary, Jim Ahern for Cillian O Connor.
