Athea GAA Club Notes:

Sympathies:
The Club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Woulfe Family on the sad passing of Timmy last week.
There was large gathering at his funeral on Friday and Saturday to pay their respects to Timmy’s family. Athea GAA andother groups formed a Guard of Honour and walked astride the hearse passing the National School where he was Principal for many years, enroute to his final resting place at Holy Cross Graveyard.
A number of his former team mates were in attendance and would assert that he was Athea’s most decorated player ever, achieving success at both club, divisional team and inter-county level as a footballer as well as a hurler. He went on to become an accomplished referee and administrator who promoted Gaelic Games in both codes. He was an exceptional ambassador of Irish Culture and was responsible for embedding Set Dancing and Tin Whistle into the locality and far beyond. He was a great supporter of Athea GAA and was instrumental in founding and developing the Ladies Club which is further detailed below. He was a great supporter of both Clubs and attended many matches and events.
He was made Club Honorary Vice President in 2023 and leaves a tremendous legacy.
In the coming weeks we will outline in more detail his achievements as a Sporting and Cultural ambassador. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

Club Fixtures:
Woodlands House Hotel County Premier Junior A Football Championship- Group 1-Round 3
Venue: Mountcollins. Date/time: Thursday September 25th 2025 at 7:45pm
Athea v Fr. Caseys-B
On Thursday week, we meet our neighbours Fr. Caseys (B Team) in Mountcollins in Round 4 of the Championship. They currently sit three from three and on top of the table and we are joint second on four points. The match will be played under lights and let’s hope the weather is favourable. Last year we met them at Quarter final Stage and won on penalties after extra time in a thrilling game.
We are improving with each game and should be competitive in this game. A win will put Fr. Caseys through to the Semi-final whereas an Athea win will put us into the Knockout stages at least.
Woodlands House Hotel County Junior C Football Championship- Group 2-Round 4
Venue: Athea. Date/time: Sunday September 28th 2025 at 2pm
Athea v Claughaun

On Sunday week our second team have their third match of the Junior C Championship at home at 2pm.
After the excitement in Meanus where we came away with a narrow win we meet a team who have also beaten Camogue Rovers but who lost to Glin last week.
On paper there won’t be much between the teams so let’s hope that the lads can capitalise on the home advantage and notch up a second win.

Ladies:
Timmy Woulfe RIP (1934-2025)
Athea Ladies Club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Timmy’s wife Nancy, daughter’s Mary, Bernadette and Noelle, sons Michael and Liam, extended family and friends.
Timmy was the driving force behind ladies’ football in Athea, founding the club in the late 1980s. In 1993, he was also one of three who established the Limerick Ladies County Board. His passion and commitment laid the foundations for the success that followed. Remarkably, within just a year of forming, the Athea Ladies won their first county title, and under Timmy’s guidance—and alongside his loyal selector and our much-loved bus driver, Connie Noonan—the team went on to win many more titles at both adult and underage level. Those journeys brought not just victories, but countless memories and friendships that we will always treasure.
Timmy’s dedication extended beyond Athea. He played an active role with the Limerick County Board, and at various times managed county ladies’ teams at different age groups. His vision, forward thinking, and willingness to embrace change ensured that ladies’ football in both Athea and Limerick continued to grow and thrive.
In 1999, Timmy passed the reins to Pat Higgins, who carried on the great work he had started, but Timmy never lost touch. He remained a proud supporter, regularly attending matches and always taking a keen interest in how the ladies were getting on.
We owe Timmy a huge debt of gratitude for the remarkable contribution he made—not only in Athea National School, Athea Ladies Club, but to ladies’ football in Limerick as a whole. His legacy lives on in every game played, every title won, and every young player who takes to the field today. Ar Dheis De go raibh A anam
