Woodlands House Hotel County Premier Junior A Football Championship- Group 1-Round 2
Venue: Foynes. Date/time: Friday August 15th 2025 at 7pm.
Athea 20-16 Ballybrown 0-09
On Friday evening we met Ballybrown in Round 2 of the Championship. The game was played in summer conditions and we got off to a great start with five unanswered points in the first ten minutes. Andrew O Riordan opened the scoring in the first minute and was followed by TJ Hunt (2p, 1f), Eoin O Shea and Brian O Connor.
Shane Mulvihill picked up a muscular injury and was replaced by Daire O Shea in the 12th minute. Midway through the first half Brian O Connor, Dylan Griffin and Eoin O Shea raised white flags. We took the foot of the gas approaching the interval as Ballybrown registered three quick points to make the half time score, 0-08 to 0-03.
Andrew opened the scoring early into the second half, followed by Daire O’Shea as we traded scores with Ballybrown in the opening 10 minutes. Dylan added two fine points before Ballybrown converted a two point free. However, Brian O Connor raised a green flag in the 19th minute from a high ball from Dylan and Evan Curry followed up with a point. Daire added a second point before Evan Curry powered through to hit the roof of the net in the 24th minute. Sean Ryan added two further points with Ballybrown registering two late points to leave the full time score at 2-16 to 0-9.
This was a much needed win to keep our qualification hopes alive and in fairness the result was never in doubt as the lads outclassed Ballybrown for much of the match.
Next up is Round 3 in over two weeks’ time against a Mountcollins team which had a great win at the weekend over Mungret St. Pauls.
Fr. Caseys also overcame Monagea by a point and now lead the group on four points with four teams including ourselves on two points.

Woodlands House Hotel County Junior C Football Championship- Group 2-Round 2:
Full Time: South Liberties 4-10 (22) | Athea 0-9 (9)
Venue: Athea
Date: Sunday August 17, 2025
South Liberties produced a dominant second-half performance to seal a comprehensive 13-point win over Athea, thanks to a clinical display in front of goal that saw them raise four green flags over the hour.
Athea started brightly and looked the better side in the early exchanges. Points from Alan Kelly and Rory Cleary gave us a narrow lead, which we stretched to three by the 15th minute. Darren Murphy added another to make it 0-03 to 0-0.
However, the momentum shifted midway through the first half when South Liberties struck their first goal, bringing the sides level. From that point on, the away side began to assert their control, notching a series of points and going into the break five points clear at 1-5 to 0-3. Athea started the second half with renewed intent, adding early points through Alan Kelly and Michael Tierney, and even narrowing the deficit to four at one stage. Tierney remained a threat, converting from both play and a free.
But South Liberties responded in devastating fashion. Goals either side of the 20-minute mark stretched their lead back out, with Darren Murphy and James Broderick among those getting on the Athea scoresheet. A third and fourth goal in the closing stages put the result beyond doubt. Despite some spirited efforts, Athea simply couldn’t find the breakthrough they needed. Their attack was repeatedly frustrated, with four wides and no goals to show for their efforts. It was a game of two halves — Athea controlled the opening quarter, but South Liberties responded with calm authority and cutting edge. The difference in goal threat was stark, and ultimately decisive. Athea will rue missed chances and the lack of a goal-scoring punch, while South Liberties can take great confidence from a performance that blended power, precision, and composure under pressure. Our next game is away to Camogue Rovers in three weeks’ time. Team Tomas Ahern, Jamie Collins, Conor Fitzgerald, Cillian O’Connor, Gavin Ambrose, Alan Kelly 0-02, Philip Daly, Martin Chawke, , Michael Tierney 0-02, 1f, Darren Murphy (0-02) Jason Kelly, Jack Sexton, James Broderick 0-02, Aidan Curry, Rory Cleary 0-01,Subs , James Ryan, Neilus Hunt, Mike Reidy, Jim Ahern, Gearoid O Sullivan, Dan McMahon.
