Athea GAA Club Notes:

Club Result:
Woodlands House Hotel County Premier Junior A Football Championship- Group 1-Round 1
Athea 1-12 Mungret St. Pauls 0-17
We travelled to Cappagh for the opening round of Group one in the Premier Junior Championship on a wet evening that only got wetter as the game progressed.
This was a game of two halves and one where the breeze played a much bigger part than first thought.
We moved the ball around very well and kept the score board ticking right throughout the first half thanks to TJ Hunt and Shane Mulvihill getting 0-04 each with Brian O Connor getting 1-01 and both Sean Ryan and Dylan Griffin registering a point each.
We played with the wind in the first half and built up a strong lead by half time with Mungret St. Pauls recording only one score in the first half, a two pointer from Rory Mullins.
We led at halftime on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-02. Remarkably we had not scored a free in the first half but with such free flowing football not many of us would have noticed. Nevertheless the supporters at the game were quite happy with the performance and were optimistic about getting off to a winning start.
Dylan Griffin tacked on another point in the opening minute of the second half leaving us 13 points to the good. What happened after this was surreal. Throughout the second half Eoin G Ryan for Mungret gave a masterclass in kicking, amassing ten points including a brace of two pointers. Rory Mullins kicked another two pointer to further reduce the deficit. We gave away a number of frees which were converted and again remarkably didn’t win a free within range. To go a full match without scoring a free is a rarity in this day and age and it wasn’t that we were missing them as the Mungret backs were very disciplined.
However we did it, we went the full second half just as Mungret did with only one score playing into a very deceptive wind. Mungret clocked up 15 points in the second half to our single point and ran out winners by two points.
The crowd went home perplexed as to how this one got away from us after a great first half performance.
This was a reminder that the new rules can lead to big swings if two pointers are scored when playing with the wind.
We have nearly four weeks until our next match which is against Ballybrown in Foynes and hopefully we will bounce back in this next one.
