Athea GAA Club Notes:
Mens Club Fixtures:
Woodlands House Hotel County Premier Junior A Football Championship- Group 1-Round 1
Venue: Cappagh. Date/time: Saturday July 19th 2025 at 7pm, Athea v Mungret/St. Pauls.
We are now in the third week of July and with Inter-County out of the way it is time for club football to take centre stage.
We make the trip to Cappagh on Saturday evening when we play Mungret St. Pauls in the first round of the Premier Junior A Championship. This year’s captain is Brian O Connor and the joint vice captains are Alan Kelly and Daire O Shea.
The more that go to these matches the more that the “Power of the16th Player” can be seen and felt by the players.
Best of luck to the Team and Management in this year’s championship.
County Result:
Tailtean Cup – Final
Limerick 2-19 Kildare 1-24
This game went down to the wire and a last minute goal attempt by Rory O Brien which was deflected over for a point before the hooter sounded left Kildare very relieved to have come out on top as Tailtean Cup winners.
Jimmy Lee would have been delighted to have taken the team this far at the start of the season. They now look forward to playing Division 3 football in 2026 and will be more fancied to do well in next year’s Tailtean Cup.
Well done to David O Connor for all the work he has done for the team as Kitman.
Ladies:
U16 Championship
Well done to our U16 girls who had a hard fought win over Adare in horrendous conditions on Monday night. Final score 5.5 to 4.4.
Fixture:
Best of luck to Athea / Glin who play Fr Casey’s in the first round of the championship this Wednesday night 16th July in Glin at 7.
Munster LGFA Festival of Football:
The Athea GAA LGFA Munster U8/U10 blitz was a huge success last Saturday 12th July. With 12 clubs attending – Limerick – Athea , Old Mill, Feohanagh Castlemahon, Glin , Kerry teams – Shannonside Tarbert, Ballyduff, Castleisland Desmond’s, Scartaglen and Clare represented by St Joseph’s Miltown Malbay, Clooney Quin, West Clare Gaels and Fergus Rovers. With each team playing 3 or 4 games in the sunshine. During the break there was novalty games, scavenger hunt and tug of war.
To run such an event, it would be impossible without the buy in from the whole community. Huge thank you to the team of parking steward, pitch Co ordinators, refeeres, shop workers and registers. Everyone who attended commented on what an enjoyable day they had helped by the glorious weather on Saturday.
U16 Division 3 Football Round 1:
Athea played their First competitive game of the year on Monday evening in very wet and windy conditions in Athea. A strong Belville Gaels team were the opposition and they used their physical strength in the first half with the wind to have a commanding lead at half-time. Athea played better in the second half but unfortunately the goals conceded in the first half proved the difference in the end. We have a very young team but showed great spirit in the second half and played our hearts out until the final whistle. Final score was Belville Gaels 6:06 to Athea 1:08. Edward Kelly, Tony Ambrose, Jamie Brosnan, Tadhg Hunt, Conor Leach, Jack Leahy, Mark Ahern, Daniel Hunt, Kane Brouder, Joe Scanlon, Mark Collins, Daniel Broderick, Aaron Hunt, Aaron Broderick, Shane Ahern, Se Ahern, Cathal Fitzgerald, Oisin McCarthy.
Hurling:
Hurling training will continue over the summer. Wednesday nights 7pm to 8pm for U14 and U16. Sunday morning for all ages 10 am to 11 am
U16 Hurlers:
Our hurlers took to the field on a balmy Sunday morning in Pairc na Ngael in round two of the division 4 league against a very strong ABK although the result might not have shown it but this young team played right to the end and never let the heads drop and played some good hurling and fantastic spirit. Well done boys
Cul Camp:
What a way to finish the week. The weather was so good to us, a bit too hot at times. I hope your child enjoyed the week. All the friends meeting up, it was like they hadn’t seen each other in years. It was also great to see new friendships made. The main thing is that they had fun and learned new football skills and improve on what they have learnt already with the Club. Thank you to the Club for treating everyone to an icecream, it went down a treat and was needed especially today. A massive thank you to all the mammies & daddies who helped out in any way this week. I wouldn’t have been able to manage, without your help. Thank you to all the children for being so attentive when we needed it. It makes things so much easier and helps the camp run smoother. Thank you, parents, for having them there on time and for being cooperative with the dropping and picking up times it helped things run more smoothly. I really enjoyed my week, meeting the new boys & girls. I have been our clubs Cúl Coordinator for the past 15 years and each year the camp goes from strength to strength. I am looking forward to next years camp already. Again thanks for everything.
Regards, Jacqueline
