West Junior B League Final:
Thursday April 24th 2025 at 7pm in Glin.
Athea 1:20 Glin 3:12 AET
All roads led to Glin on Thursday evening where we met Glin in the West Junior B League Final. After being beaten comfortably in our group game by them, they will have been confident of a repeat, however, we turned up with a big panel just like last week against ABK in the semi-final. Things looked ominous when Glin had three points on the board by the second minute. Donnadh Daly who was in fine form scored a two point free after Eoin Woulfe had scored from play in the opening minute.
Our captain, Aidan Curry opened our account in the third minute after a neat pass from Andy Ahern. Glin had added another three points from Daly before the ever improving Tadhg Ahern put one over in the eighth minute. Daly added a further free to open the margin to 5 points before we hit form with Mark Reidy (2F), Michael Walsh and Daire O Shea cutting the gap to the minimum.
In the 22nd minute we conceded a goal scored by Ed Mulvihill and two minutes later conceded another one scored by the inform Daly to go seven points down.
Just before halftime Sean Ryan and James Hunt replaced Daire O Shea and Michael Tierney with Sean pointing before the halftime whistle. The score at the break was 2:08 to 0:07. Was this to be a repeat of the earlier game as our expectations were lowering?
We made further changes at halftime. A run of three wides early in the second half was stemmed when Mark Reidy put over a free eight minutes in. Daly again shone as he hit his second goal and Glin’s third in the 11th minute to leave us nine points behind.
As we did in the first half, we rallied and Mark scored two points followed by a fine Andy Ahern point and this was quickly followed up a goal from Aidan Curry who fisted to the net in the 17th minute reducing the margin to three points.
Glin replied with a point before we added three of our own through Mark, Sean and Andy by the 27th minute leaving us one point behind. Daly pushed them two ahead only for Mark Reidy to level the match with a free and one from play. The cheers from our supporters at the game could be heard in Athea. Glin were ahead for all but the last minute of the game and now the momentum was shifting as we entered extra time on a scoreline of 3:10 to 1:16.
In the first period of extra time Sean Ryan pointing from play and Mark Reidy with a free kept the game in the balance as Daly scored two frees leaving the score 3:12 to 1:18. We lost Tadhg Ahern to a black card in this opening period. In the second period, James Hunt put us ahead after 4 minutes and was going well before he was hit with a heavy tackle which led to a Glin player dismissal. Mark Reidy registered his tenth point of the day with two minutes to go to leave us two points ahead and our resilience took us to the finish line in an enthralling match for the many fans in attendance. The final score was 1:20 to 3:12
Young Sean Twomey, Tadhg Ahern and Andy Ahern had notable performances in this game. Donnadh Daly finished the game with 2:10 for Glin after an outstanding performance at this level. Johhny Walsh of the West Board presented the cup to Aidan Curry amidst great cheers and celebrations by the Athea team and followers. The historians pointed to 1994 since Athea had won a West Junior B Final as this team looks forward to a County Semifinal. Date and Venue to be confirmed.
