Athea GAA Club Notes:
U20A Football Championship – Round 4:
On Saturday afternoon our U20 SGA Gaels men’s team travelled to Dromcollogher to play Drom/Broadford in the third round match. It was wet, windy and heavy going from the start. Drom were well up for the game after losing their last 2 games, and needed a win to stay in the competition, while we were also missing 4 players to injury etc. Drom started off really well with a few points before SGA Gaels recorded a score. The wind seemed to have some effect for Drom, and with handling errors and fouls in front of goal, SGA Gaels gave easy points away. SGA Gaels stuck in, while missing a few frees and then hit the crossbar, it just was not going their way. The first half finished off at SGA Gaels 0:03 – Drom 0:08.
In the second half SGA Gaels were the better team, but unfortunately Drom set their defence well, and kept us out. Then we were caught out when they countered and scored a goal. SGA Gaels did not drop their heads and really stepped up the pace, but it was too much at the end. Final score: SGA Gaels 0:08 – Drom 1:10. We are still in the competition, with our next match against Na Piarsaigh in Athea on Saturday Dec 7th at 2pm, with a win, putting us through to the semis. Again there was a large number of supporters coming out to support the boys in Dromcollogher, thank you all for travelling.
