Athea GAA Club Notes:
Clár Funding:
We were delighted to receive news Monday morning that we have been granted funding of €48,597 towards the enhancement of our car park to the side / back of the Club House. Many thanks to everyone involved in getting this over the line, especially to John Kelly who looks after our grant applications so diligently.
The scheme is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development. It is delivered by local authorities in consultation with groups in local communities.
U9 Football:
Our U9 footballers travelled to Coolyroe on Sunday evening to take part in the annual Nigel Buicke football tournament. They performed brilliantly against Castlemahon and Newcastle West and were fully deserving of the medals they received. This was their last outing of the year and we look forward to seeing them all back again next year in the maroon and white. Team: Noah Collins, Megan Reidy, Grace Collins, Saoirse Mulvihill, Daithi Mulvihill, Hannah Kelly, Darcy Chawke, James Kelly, Ewan McCarthy, Tom Mullane, Maya Mullane, Mila McCarthy, John Mulvihill, Oisin Kennedy, Rachel Roche, Maggie Ahern, Tadgh O’ Connor.
U11 Parish League Final:
On a beautiful evening for football we brought down the curtain on our underage football activities for 2024 with the eagerly anticipated U11 Parish League final on Friday evening last. Athea Gaels took on Athea Giants in what the neutral supporter called a game for the ages. Athea Giants captained by Anna Murphy shaded what was an excellent game of football with the lead changing hands several times before the final whistle was blown. Thanks again to all involved in contributing to what was a lovely evening culminating in a medal presentation and well deserved party for all the players.
U12 Football Go-Games:
Athea played their last U12 game on Tuesday October 1st in glorious conditions in Monagea. Athea again delivered an impressive display against a fine Monagea side, it was great to have 21 players available for this away match and a big thank-you to all the parents for their continued support throughout the year which is greatly appreciated. We played 7 very competitive games in the go-games series against excellent opposition and enjoyed every minute of it. This young team have impressed through-out the year and are developing into a fantastic group of players with great skills, attitude and commitment. We say goodbye to the players moving on to U14 football next year, hello and welcome to the new players that will join the u12 panel next year and to the core of the panel remaining, keep-up the excellent work in 2025.
