U14 Football Division 2 Cup Final:
Athea 0:05 to Mungret St. Pauls 2:09
Our U14 footballers travelled to Mick Neville Park Rathkeale on Sunday Morning last to take on Mungret St. Pauls in the Division 2 Final on what was a very wet and windy morning. We had beaten Mungret St. Pauls in the league stage, but we knew they were going to be a very different proposition in the final given the size of the club and the scale of the population on their door-step and so it transpired. Our boys played with the storm in the first half and were only ahead by 4 points to 3 at the break, having left a couple of goal chances after us. Against the storm in the second half we defended heroically and mid way though we were still only 2 points behind but unfortunately we couldn’t maintain our resistance and Mungret St. Pauls scored 2:03 in the final quarter, kicking some excellent long range points. This time last year the boys won the Division 3 Cup and in the space of 12months reached a Division 2 Cup final which is an achievement we are extremely proud of and shows what talented and dedicated boys we have in our small but great Parish. Special mention to Mark Reidy who managed the team and a big thanks to all the supporters who braved the inclement weather to support the boys in the County Final. Panel: Edward Kelly, Paddy O’Connor, Jamie Brosnan, Tony Ambrose, Tom Mullane, Jack Leahy, Daniel Broderick, Daniel Hunt, Mark Collins (capt), Tadhg Hunt, Kane Brouder, Aaron Hunt, John Ahern, Aaron Broderick, Shane Ahern, Conor Leach, Cathal Fitzgerald, Oisin McCarthy, Eoin Ahern, Se Ahern, Liam Og Reidy, Nathan Ambrose and Joe Scanlon(injured).

Junior Men:
Athea 0-10 Fr Caseys 1-07
Athea won 4-3 on penalties after extra time.
A large crowd attended this most exciting game played under lights in Mountcollins last Thursday night. With strong icy wind and constant rain, both teams must be complimented for serving up a great contest. Fr Caseys playing with the wind started the better and raced into a 1-03 to 0-01 lead after 15 mins, we gradually got into the game and had more possession eventually going in at half time down 1-04 to 0-04. We started the second half with a point from Andrew O Riordan eventually drawing level 0-07 to 1-04 with about 15 mins to go, but we could never get in front. The Abbeyfeale boys went in front again with their only point of the second half, we were beginning to rue a couple of missed goal chances. Shane Mulvihill got his 5th point of the game from a free to level matters at 1-05 to 0-08. Shortly after the final whistle blew and we were headed for extra time. The extra time was equally hard fought, we were against the wind again in the first half and trailed 1-07 to 0-09 at half time. We got the only score of the second half with a brilliant Daire O’Shea effort from play. So it was on to penalties as the wind and rain showed no signs of easing. The big talking point in the packed stand, where the supporters were fine and dry (unlike the perished players) was the introduction of young Tomás Ahern in goals for Athea in the dying minutes of the game. Fr Caseys were first up to the penalty spot, but Tomás made a great save, Shane Mulvihill then scored our first penalty to give us the advantage. T.J. Hunt scored our second penalty while Tomás made another great save from their 3rd penalty taker. Andy Ahern and Andrew O Riordan went on to score their penalties to give us a deserved victory, to the delight of all involved. We have now qualified for the county Premier Junior football championship semi final v Monagea on Sunday October 20th at 1pm in Abbeyfeale. This will be our first men’s semifinal since 2007 when we went on to win the County Intermediate Championship.
