Athea GAA Club Notes:
U8 Hurling:
Huge well done to our U8’s last Saturday who played Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan and Croagh/Kilfinny in 3 great games. Their skills are improving with every game.
U12 Go-Games Football:
On Tuesday night last our U12s played Newcastle West in the third round of the Go-Games. We fielded two teams and again played some great football against a strong NCW team. All players are continuing to improve. Our next game is at home to St. Senans on Tuesday August 20th and training continues every Friday.
U14 Division Mens 1A Football Championship:
We welcomed Mungret to Athea on Thursday evening for the final round of the Championship knowing a win would put us joint second in the table. It was a difficult evening for football with a strong wind and driving rain for the majority of the match. Athea played with the wind in the first half and even though we missed a lot of scores we still finished the half 2:05 to 0:00 in front. The second half was all about defending as Mungret had the majority of position and with the wind staged attack after attack however the Athea boys defended heroically and held out for a 2:06 to 0:04 win. We are now through to a County Semi-final in mid-September with details to be announced. Panel: Edward Kelly, Oisin McCarthy, Jamie Brosnan, Paddy O’Connor, Tom Mullane, Jack Leahy, Daniel Broderick, Daniel Hunt (4pts), Mark Collins (1:01), Aarron Hunt, Joe Scanlon, John Ahern, Tadhg Hunt, Aaron Broderick (1:01), Shane Ahern (1pt), Se Ahern, Eoin Ahern, Conor Leach, Liam Og Reidy, Owen Kenrick.
U14 Ladies:
Best of luck to the u14’s who play their next championship game away to Gerald Griffins Thursday 15th at 7pm in Ballyhahill.
U16 Ladies:
Well done to our U16 ladies who played their final group game in the championship and registered a good win over Cappagh. There were some excellent scores on the night from a number of players. The girls will now play a home quarter final Monday 26th August.
Ladies Intermediate Championship Round 1:
Our girls made the long trip over to Knockainey Saturday evening to take on the home side. Despite starting well we found ourselves down 2.7 to 1.1 at the break. In the second half Knockainey got on top and took full advantage of the possession. It will be a quick turn around for this team when they take on Fr Casey’s in Athea next Saturday evening 17th August at 7pm. Some positives on the night were the youth coming on to the team – with Molly Hunt, Maeve Murphy and Emma Scanlon making their championship debut.

Dog Fouling:
The situation on the playing pitch has gotten very bad over the last few weeks, with dog poo all over the playing area. This is a serious health risk to all who play on the club’s pitches. The faeces stick to the footballs and sliotars, it gets on people hands, clothes and other parts of their bodies. We are asking the many responsible Dog owners, who use our grounds to pass on information to any club member, if they see any dog let loose by their owners or a stray dog around the pitches. Please give a description of the dog (colour, breed, size etc). If this continues, unfortunately we will have to follow the steps of other clubs and ban all dogs from our ground. We are once again appealing for the public’s help in this serious matter.
