Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan GAA Club Notes:

Dramatic Win for Intermediate Footballers:
County Intermediate Football Championship Round 2
ABK 2-16 Claughaun 3-11
Our intermediate footballers grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat in Clarina on Saturday evening with a sensational smash and grab victory against Claughaun. With four minutes remaining Claughaun looked to be coasting towards their first championship win as they led by 7 points on a scoreline on 3-09 to 0-11. Two rapid fire two pointers from David O’Shaughnessy and Paki Moran suddenly had the gap back to 3 points however the city side regrouped and responded with two injury time points to put them 5 clear with 4 minutes of injury time played. As the thunder threatened in Clarina it was ABK who provided the lightning strike when firstly Joey Rushe smashed his rebounded penalty to the net, Tomas Sheehan then landed a monster free from the ground before Sam Colgan rifled home a winning goal in the 7th minute of injury team to complete the most dramatic of turnarounds.
This win puts us on 4 points after two championship games and sets us up nicely for a tilt at the knockout stages. Well done to all involved. Team and scorers Jamie Dolan 0-02 frees, Callum Daly, Eoin Condon, John Fitzsimons, Niall Barry, Shane Hallinan, Pakie Moran 0-02 (2pts), Jamie O’Sullivan, Alan McGrath, Padhraic McMahon 0-01, Padraic Murphy 0-01, Sam Colgan 1-00, Joey Rushe 1-03 (2f), David O’Shaughnessy 0-03 (1x 2ptr), Danny Neville 0-01. Subs used Tom Kelly, Luke Gammell 0-01, Tomas Sheehan 0-02 frees, Sean Whelan.

Under 16 Football Championship:
ABK Desmonds 5-06 Galtee Gaels 4-12
Our under 16s made the 154km round trip to Kilbehenney on Monday last to take on a strong Galtee Gaels Galbally amalgamation in round 3 of the under 16 Football championship. After a sluggish first half performance we trailed by ten points at half time on a scoreline of 2-09 to 1-02 with a Brooklyn Delahunty goal the highlight of our first half efforts.
Maybe the long drive was to blame for our poor first half showing as Desmonds emerged a different side in the second half with Cillian Murphy leading the charge with a superb goal in the opening minute of the second half after a 50 metre run. Brooklyn Delahunty soon followed this up with his second goal of the night and Darragh O’Shaughnessy landed a free to reduce the gap to just a goal. The home side responded with a goal of their own to push the gap out to six points. Two excellent individual goals from Danny Anglim followed to claw us back in to the match once more. Trailing by two points with time running out Brooklyn Delahunty reduced the gap to just one point before Danny Anglim curled over the equaliser well in to injury time to complete the comeback. Unfortunately, there would be a late sting in the tail as the home side launched one final attack and goaled with the last kick of the game to grab all two points and send us home empty handed. Overall a very entertaining game with our poor first half showing ultimately proving costly. Team and scorers Luca Zoncada, Tom Kelly, Danny Murphy, Aaron Cregan, Nathan Dalton, Cormac Fitzgerald, Sam Costello, Cillian Murphy 1-00, Cathal Daly, Eoin McNamara, Brooklyn Delahunty 2-02, Hugh Sheehy, Martin Meehan, Darragh O’Shaughnessy 0-03 2frees, Danny Anglim 2-01. Subs used Rian Kelly, Tom Harty, Mark McDonagh, Donnacha O’Gorman, Rory Moran.

Minor Football Championship:
Askeaton-Ballysteen-Kilcornan 4-08 Hospital/Herbertstown 3-12
Our minor footballers campaign came to a disappointing end in Ballysteen last Wednesday night as we went down by a single point to Hospital Herbertstown. With two wins and a loss so far we needed to win by 9 points to advance to the knockout stages. Four excellent goals from Shane Ryan (2), Finn O’Gorman and Zach Birdthistle had us leading by 5 points with ten minutes remaining tonight with the required nine point winning margin within our sights but a late Hospital Herbertstown rally saw them outscore us by six points and snatch victory.
A disappointing end to a campaign that started so well but there are plenty of positives to build on going forward. Team and scorers Luca Zoncada, Paudie Hanrahan, Cathal Guerin,
Matthew Kehoe, Conor McNamara 0-01, Cillian Murphy, Nathan Dalton, Zach Birdthistle 1-00, Finn O Gorman 1-02 1f, Dylan Costelloe, Sean Downes 0-02, Jamie Sheahan, Darragh O’Shaughnessy 0-01, Shane Ryan 2-00, Danny O’Flaherty 0-02. Under 14 Hurling Championship:
ABK Desmonds 2-08 Southside Gaels 4-07
Our under 14 hurlers unbeaten run came to an end on Thursday night versus Southside Gaels. Three second half goals from the City amalgamation was enough to tip the balance. This concludes our group games with four games and one loss enough to qualify us for a county semi final spot in three weeks time versus Crecora Manister. Team and scorers Darragh Moran, John Hanlon, Frank Murphy, Cian Sheehan, Tom Harty, Dylan Sheahan, Kieran Condon, Michael O’Shaughnessy, Hugh Sheehy, Danny Anglim 1-00, Rian Kelly 0-02 1f, Kieran Hanley 0-04, Niall Sheehy 0-01, John O Brien 1-00, Darragh Whelan 0-01. Subs used Saul Birdthistle, Noah O’Malley, Callum Dalton, Paidi Sheehy, Jake Gallagher.

County Under 14 Football Championship:
ABK Desmonds 5-05 Bruff 2-03
Our under 14 footballers guaranteed county shield semi final qualification on Sunday evening when they defeated Bruff in round 5 of the under 14 Football Championship in Bruff. We led by four points at half time on a scoreline of 1-03 to 0-02 with Danny Anglim goaling and our points coming from Tom Harty, Niall Sheehy and an excellent effort from Dylan Sheahan off his left boot. We quickly put the game to bed in the 3rd quarter with three further goals from Danny and one from Niall Sheehy before substitute Callum Harte landed the score of the game with a beautiful effort with the outside of his boot. Overall a good win with good performances from Rian Kelly, Cian Sheehan, Dylan O’Connor, Saul Birdthistle and midfield dynamo Michael O’Shaughnessy. Team and scorers Darragh Moran, Cian Sheehan, Rian Kelly, Jake Gallagher, Cian Somers, Dylan O’Connor, Kieran Hanley, Aaron Ranahan, Michael O’Shaughnessy, Tom Harty 0-01, Danny Anglim 4-01, Sean Greene, Saul Birdthistle, Dylan Sheahan 0-01, Niall Sheehy 1-01. Woodlands House Hotel County Junior C Hurling Championship Group 2:
Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 1-18 St Kierans 2-10
Round 2 of the Junior C Championship was played last Monday evening under sweltering heat in Askeaton. St Kieran’s started the quicker and had registered two early points before Tom Lyng put Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan on the scoreboard. The game swung over and back in the first half with the home team really getting on top early. Zach Birdthistle and Paul Maher were picking up a lot of ball around the middle and we went on a scoring spree with Jamie Dolan and Dave Ryan firing over. Tom added a couple of frees and Conor Purcell pointed from a tight angle to give us an early 0-07 to 0-02 lead.
Kieran’s though managed to wrestle back the initiative and Jonathon Ruttle knocked over a free, Kieran’s would then raise the first green flag of the game, the ball was worked in from the left and the initial shot was well saved by ABK keeper Conor Ranahan however the rebound was swept home to reduce the deficit to one. In a fractious period, Ruttle would convert another four free’s to put Kieran’s a goal up going toward half time. Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan responded though, Cormac McMahon getting a lovely score from distance. We had Cathal Moran to thank with a man bearing down on goal only to be brilliantly hooked to thwart the goal attempt and completed the clearance to keep us within two. Tom Lyng notched two from play, one after nice work from Dave Ryan who won his duel with the corner back and picked out Tom with a pass to swing over and level the score going into the break. Half time Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan 0-10 St Kierans 1-07.
The second half saw us take control of the game early. Tom Lyng would get the scoring started from out on the left before adding a free. He then got on the end of a lovely move started by Conor McNamara who won a breaking ball around the middle, drove forward and laid off to Sean McMahon, who seemed to be everywhere in the second half, and he found Tom in space to put us three points up. Kieran’s were now looking for goals and once again Conor Ranahan was called upon and made a great save down to his right. Both teams brought in fresh legs and we introduced, Maurice Somers, Adam O’Sullivan, Mike O Meara and Sam Duggan, Somers pointing with nearly his first touch. Sean McMahon then put us six points to the good when he absolutely rifled the ball to the net and it was a lead we wouldn’t relinquish despite Kieran’s getting another goal and a couple more Ruttle free’s. Tom Lyng added three points to his tally including two frees and when the final whistle went it was a great five-point win for Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan and two wins from two in the group. Our under 12 hurlers made the trip to North Kerry on Saturday morning for a great day of hurling against Ballyduff. We had a panel of 27 panels and fielded two teams. There was some great hurling played with our lads taking some excellent scores. We stopped at Jumbos in Listowel on the way home for some well deserved chips. Well done to all involved and thanks to Ballyduff Gaa for hosting us.

Inter County Players:
Well done to Darragh O’Shaughnessy who was part of the Limerick under 15 football team who beat Antrim last Saturday in Abbotstown. Jason Daly is also a coach with this side.

Congratulations to Cillian Murphy and Brooklyn Delahunty who both played in Limerick’s O’Donovan Shield win over Carlow (u16 football) in Mick Neville Park on Saturday.
