Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan GAA Club Notes:
Junior A Premier Hurlers triumphant in 9 goal thriller:
Woodlands House Hotel County Premier Junior A Hurling Championship Group 1
Askeaton-Ballysteen-Kilcornan 5-21 Monagea 4-21
Askeaton-Ballysteen-Kilcornan were in Round 2 action on Thursday evening against Monagea in Newcastle West and both teams served up a serious display of scoring in a game that swung over and back right until the final whistle. We got out of the blocks fast with Oisin O Farrell opening the scoring with a free, Jack Ward raised a green flag after good work from Oisin who picked up a ball wide right, drove at goal and batted across to Jack who finished to the back of the net. Tadgh O Brien added one from play before Monagea got on the scoreboard. Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan dominated the opening exchanges with Matthew Keaveney, Eoin Condon and Senan O Brien winning a lot of primary possession. The lead was extended with a couple free’s, a Chris Kenny score and when Tadgh recycled a sideline from Senan, he found Oisin O Farrell who made no mistake with a sight of goal and rifled home to leave the score 2-05 to 0-01.
Monagea made some tactical changes and packed out the middle third and started to get a foothold picking up some breaks and scored a couple of points to reduce the deficit. Cathal Guerin picked out Eoin Condon with a lovely short puck out and his ball into Oisin saw the white flag raised, Tadgh added a second from play before Monagea struck with Thomas O Callaghan benefitting from the extra space created inside and firing to the net to bring it back to six. We responded very well to the goal with a Chris Kenny goal, beautifully flicked home at the back post from another Senan sideline.
Monagea then hit a bit of a purple patch heading towards half time as Sean Herlihy hit a goal along with three frees and Jason Brouder and Gavin Dorgan added points from play. In reply we had a Jack Ward point and another well taken free from Oisin and that left only four points between the sides in a hugely entertaining first half. Half time Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 3-10 Monagea 2-09.
It was important for both teams to get a fast start after the break and again it was Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan that got out of the blocks. Matthew Keaveney battling hard around the middle and laying off to Tadgh who popped over before Jack Ward raised his second green flag of the game, this time it was a well worked move starting with Cathal Guerin finding Alan McGrath from the restart, he worked the ball to Niall Barry who delivered the ball into the square, the attempted flick didn’t come off but Jack was on hand to slam it home and added a point soon after to swing the momentum back our way with an eight point lead.
The game was far from over though and Sean Herlihy struck with a second goal from long range, added two more from a 65 and free and when Padhraic McMahon was bearing down on goal it looked like he’d restore the 6-point cushion only for Kevin Mulcahy to make a great stop in the Monagea goal. A Ciaran Brouder point from play then reduced the deficit to a single goal and the game was very much in the balance going down the stretch. Oisin kept the scoreboard ticking over with another free, but Sean Herlihy would reply with one of his own and when Monagea scored their fourth goal of the day the teams were level at 4-14 a piece with less than ten to go.
Both teams introduced fresh legs, and we brought in Fiachra Butler-White, Declan Guerin and Evan Costello. Sean Whelan really came to the fore in the second half and was linking up well with our forwards, supplying the ball to Chris Kenny who let fly from out under the stand and saw the ball sail between the posts. Tadgh, Oisin and the freshly introduced Fiachra added points to give us a two-point lead, but it was Fiachra who would strike the game winning goal, expertly flicking to the net from another deep ball in from Sean Whelan to leave us 5-20 to 4-18 up.
Monagea pushed hard in the final minutes and notched three points, but the defence stood firm and didn’t allow any further goal chances with Tadgh Hanley having been rock solid all game. Oisin O Farrell would have the final say and registered his eleventh point of the game to see Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan over the line with two wins from two now in the group. There is a break now for a football round and we will play St Pats next on August 23rd

Under 16 Hurling Championship Round 4:
ABK Desmonds 2-12 Dromin Athlacca/Banogue 3-9
Our under 16 hurlers maintained their unbeaten run in an exciting encounter against Dromin Athlacca/Banogue in Askeaton last Monday night. After a shaky start to the second half a Brooklyn Delahunty goal got us back level before Cathal Daly landed a few superb long range frees to push us 3 points clear. The visitors goaled from a penalty to level things up with 10 minutes remaining but Todd O’Shaughnessy replied immediately with a fine point to put us back in the lead. With time almost up Gavin Rushe got the final touch on a long delivery from Cathal Daly to give us a three point lead however the men from the South struck for an equalising goal with the last puck of the ball to deny us the win.
However the point gained brings up another step closer to a county semi final for our under 16s. Under 16 Football Championship Round 2:
ABK Desmonds 6-09 Cappagh Rathkeale 1-08
Our under 16 footballers produced an excellent second half display in the Bog Garden on Wednesday night to move on to three points in the under 16 Football Championship after last weeks draw versus Ballylanders.
Leading by just three points at half time despite playing with the strong breeze in the first half things were looking dicey but a five goal blitz inside 15 minutes from Brooklyn Delahunty with three and Danny Anglim with two put the result to bed long before the final whistle. We had some great performances throughout the field with Aaron Cregan, Eoin McNamara and Cillian Murphy prominent throughout. The returning Cormac Fitzgerald was solid as a rock at centre back with wing back Nathan Dalton kicking an inspirational first half point. Gavin Rushe also kicked a fine second half point while Brooklyn Delahunty put on a masterclass hitting an incredible 4-04 from play. Debutant Danny Anglim combined with Delahunty to grab himself 2-01 and round off a good night for the under 16s. Next up is a trip to Kilbehenney on Monday night when we take on Galtee Gaels. Team and scorers Luca Zoncada, Aaron Cregan, Danny Murphy, Tom Kelly, Nathan Dalton 0-01, Cormac Fitzgerald, Sam Costello, Cillian Murphy, Gavin Rushe 0-01, Eoin McNamara 0-01, Brooklyn Delahunty 4-04, Mark McDonagh, Danny Anglim 2-01, Darragh O’Shaughnessy 0-01 free, Martin Meehan, Subs used Tom Harty, Rian Kelly,
