Griffin Coaches County Intermediate Football Championship Group 1
ABK 3-19 St Patricks 0-15
Our Intermediate footballers got their Championship underway on Friday night in Mungret against St Patricks. The early exchanges were hard fought, and the opening score came for Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan from the boot of goalkeeper Jamie Dolan who slotted a lovely 45. St Patricks responded with a booming 2 pointer followed swiftly by a point. Shane Hallinan got the 1st of his two scores after some nice interplay with McGrath and Gallagher through the middle. James O Meara fired over a nice point to level matters and when ABK were awarded a penalty for a drag back Joey Rushe dispatched the ball to the roof of the net giving the Pats goalie no chance, it was a lead we wouldn’t relinquish. Danny Neville fresh from his Tailteann Cup exploits with Limerick was popping up across the field and picked up a ball out left, he dropped the shoulder and was bearing down on goal, a last-ditch tackle dislodged the ball however Danny still dispatched to the net for a second goal. Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan were in the ascendancy and added points from Alan McGrath, a Padraic Murphy free and another Shane Hallinan score from distance. Joey Rushe would add two points to his tally and Jamie Dolan another pointed free from just inside the arc to finish the half on the up. Half time Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 2-09 0-3 St Patricks, St Patricks came with a renewed vigour in the 2nd half and got the first few scores of the half, they were working the ball well and slotted three free’s in the early stages. They created a good goal scoring opportunity, but Shane Hallinan got back with a last minute intervention to knock the ball loose. Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan though settled down and started working the ball through the hands with Sean Whelan scoring a nice point from out on the left, Murphy and Rushe added points before St Patricks were again guilty of a foul inside and Joey Rushe was presented with a second penalty on the day, which again was expertly dispatched and when Jamie Dolan came forward to nail a two point free from the left we were left in a great position going into the closing stages. St Pats replied with an Eoin Hanrahan 2 pointer but couldn’t get any closer with Pakie Moran (x2), Joey Rushe (x2) and Jamie Dolan all adding scores before the final whistle. A great start to the Championship and plenty of good scores on the night Full time Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan 3-19 St Patricks 0-15. Woodlands House Hotel County Junior B Football Championship Group 1:
ABK 2-10 Cappagh 1-10
The Junior B’s got their Championship campaign underway in Foynes on Sunday morning with a clash against local rivals Cappagh. The game was slow to get going and ABK would get the opening score from a Sam Duggan free. Sam would link up with Tomás Sheahan for the next score before a flurry of Richard O’ Dea scores put Cappagh a point up. Tomás and O’ Dea then exchanged 2 pointers. The teams were level when a nicely worked move down the left from Cormac McMahon and Evan Costello found the ball into Tomás again who slotted over from close range. It looked like the teams would go in at the half time level until Darragh Leonard got onto a lovely pop pass from Tomás that released him through on goal and he made no mistake shooting low across the goalie to give us a goal advantage at the break, Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 1-05 Cappagh 0-05. We started the second half much the bettor and Maurice Somers combined with Evan Costello for the opening point of the half followed quickly by a Sam Duggan goal, Conor McNamara brilliantly breaking down the Cappagh kick out, Cormac McMahon fed Duggan who knifed through on goal and burst the net for the goal. We made hay in this purple patch with Darragh Leonard having a goal bound effort turned over the bar for a point and Evan, Maurice and Tomás added further points to give us a cushion down the stretch. Cappagh fought all the way though and were sparked into life by a Richard Lenihan 2 point free and they tagged on another 3 points to close the gap to 6. A turnover high up the pitch gave Cappagh a chance to score a goal and it was duly dispatched to close the gap to just 3. Cappagh pushed for an equaliser, and we had Conor Ranahan to take for a full length save which looked destined for the net. The backs though got back on top and Shane Hanrahan and Matthew Keaveney turned over a couple of balls in the last 2 minutes to see us safely over the line. A good start with 2 points on the board and it’ll be Oola next on the 17th of August. /skeaton Ballysteen/Kilcornan 2-10 Cappagh 1-10.
