AHANE GAA CLUB NOTES
Ahane Junior Hurlers
Ahane’s first Junior hurling competitive fixture for 2019 was against Ballybricken on Sunday evening in Mackey Park. Given the league game doubled up as a Brian Butler Cup fixture, there was plenty at stake for both sides in what turned out to be a hard fought game throughout. Despite a spirited display and showing patches of fine hurling we went in behind at the break, trailing 2-08 to 0-10. Unfortunately we were always chasing an organised and youthful Ballybricken side, who eventually won out on a final score of 3-14 to Ahane’s 1-15.
Team: R. Magill, T. O’Sullivan, M. Hayes, B. Collins, J. Doheny, T. Doheny, J. Power, M. Power, A. Minihan, N. Moran (1-10 (1-5 frees)), T. Clifford, P. Minihan (0-2), C. Morrissey (0-2), D. Kennedy
Subs: T. Kennedy, J. Maguire, S. Ryan, S. Richardson, G. Hayes
Ahane Senior Hurlers
The group make their 2019 championship bow this Friday 12th in Claughaun vs Monaleen at 6:30pm. With two group games before the break for Inter-county action, the lads will be hoping to hit the ground running this year and take full points against their neighbours. The team have new management on board for 2019, with former player Davy Givens having taken up the hot-seat as manager, along with Donnach O’Donnell as coach and former senior players Conor Quirke and Sean Madden making up a strong backroom team. The panel has been bolstered by the addition of some of the current crop of minors as well as recent U21 members who will no doubt be pushing for places in 2019.
We wish the squad and management the very best of luck and ask the club supporters to get behind this group by turning out in strong support for this first round game.
Féile Peile na nÓg 2019 – a great start to the year
The Ahane U14 Football team travelled to Ballybrown GAA Club last weekend to take part in the Feile Peil competition. There was a fantastic effort put in by each and every one of the 20 players who did themselves and Ahane proud on the day with a spirited team effort and lovely brand of football that was played. The team had good wins over Kilpeacon and Killacolla Gaels and were unlucky to go under against a fine Ballybrown outfit by 5 points with Ballybrown going on to top the group and qualify for the semi-final of the competition. The U14 Football mentors would like to thank Sean and Jack from the U12 squad for supporting the U14 group on the day and compliment all players on their behaviour both on and off the field. (Team Photograph below)
A special THANK YOU to those who supported the team in Ballybrown and all who made sandwiches, brought fruit, water, provided and cooked hot food for the players and supporters and everyone who helped with Feile arrangements – another great team effort off the field!!!! We look forward to the start of the football league ahead over the coming months. Ahane GAA Club would like to acknowledge the massive effort of Ballybrown GAA for hosting all teams and we thank them and Limerick GAA for a very well-run competition on Saturday last. We wish Ballybrown all the best in the next stage of Feile Peil.
Next up for the U14 group is an exciting time for the hurlers who start their Feile Iomaint on Saturday 13th April.

Ahane Senior Camogie Round 2 League Report
Ahane started their league campaign on Saturday 6th April against Crecora in Mackey Park Ahane. On what was a beautiful evening for camogie both teams took to the field. Ahane were first out of the traps and got the first score of the game in the first minute. Not far behind Crecora got their first score in the second minute of the match. There were fierce battles going on all over the field and there was no ball won easily. Ahane got their first goal after seven minutes with Judith putting the ball in the back of the net after some great out field play by Laura. There were some great pieces of team play from both sides, and a lot of Ahane’s scores came from great interlinking play. Ahane’s second goal came from Shauna who again got on the end of a great piece of play from out the field which saw the Ahane forwards putting in the hard yards against the Crecora defence.
Centre back Noreen placed some beautiful balls into the awaiting Ahane half forward and full forward line, many of these passes were where the scores came from, Niamh, Roisin, Judith, and Sarah all got points from play in the first half. The Crecora goalkeeper made a great save towards the end of the first half, to stop what was a rasper of a shot from Niamh. Going in at half time the score line had it as Ahane 2-7 Crecora 0-2.
Judith opened the scoring in the second half for Ahane with a point from play in the second minute of the half. Crecora’s goalkeeper made another fantastic save five minutes into the second half and the Crecora defence cleared their lines. Ahane remained well on top for the remainder of the second half with Niamh, Shauna, and Judith adding on the points. Ailish came on and scored Ahane’s third goal of the game with an absolutely blistering shot into the back of the net. Crecora got their final point of the game in the 21st minute of the second half. Both teams brought in subs to freshen up the teams throughout the second half. It was great to see some of the younger girls get their first taste of senior camogie.
The game ended on a score line of Ahane 3-17 Crecora 0-03. Ahane will now play their rescheduled round one league game against Granagh/Ballingarry on Easter Monday in Ahane at 6pm.
Ahane’s under 16’s also started their league campaign this week as they travelled to Ballyagran to play Ballyagran on Thursday 4th April. The girls put in a great effort and came away with a win on a score line of Ahane 3-05 Ballyagran 0-01. They will now play Ballybrown in Mackey Park on the 18th April at 6:30pm.
