AHANE GAA CLUB NOTES

Ahane GAA Club AGM

We held our AGM last sunday evening in the clubhouse. With great numbers in attendance, the committee discussed another very busy and successful year for the club. This year saw our Senior hurlers be promoted to Senior A for the 2020 season, a very positive step forward for our club. We also had a very positive year with our U21’s who reached the County Semi Final but were unfortunate to lose out to eventual winners Doon. Our minors saw their season come to an end by the narrowest of margins with a loss against Ballybrown which meant they did not qualify for the County Semi Final. This year also saw our Junior footballers beat Bruree in the Championship which was the highlight of their season.

Our under age teams have had very successful year also and we would like to thank all those involved with Bord Na nOg for all their time, effort, and commitment over the year. We are looking forward to another great year in 2020.

On behalf of the club we would like to sincerely thank all the management teams of all the groups mentioned above. We appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into managing, coaching, and working with your teams and how much it benefits the club as a whole.

This year also saw us take on our big fundraising event ‘A Night at the OsKaRs’ which raised much needed funds for the 4G surface for the Wall Ball. Again we would like to thank everyone who was involved with the OsKaRs for making it such a successful event!

Huge well done to all our players who represented the club on inter county panels, school’s teams, and college teams. You represented yourselves, your family and the club so well!

Finally we would like to thank all outgoing officers for all the work, time, dedication, and effort you have given to and put into the club.

A special word of thanks to Mary Ryan who is our outgoing secretary, Mary has given so much over her five year term as secretary of our club and there will never be enough words to thank her for all she has done for the club and all she has given the club! Thanks to other outgoing officers; John Meskell Snr, John Meskell Jnr, John Ryan, Martin McCormack, Mike Murphy and Fiona Quirke!

We now look forward to 2020, with the hope that it will be as successful it not more successful than the season just gone! Thank you all for your continued support of the club, it is greatly appreciated.

U12 Camogie

The Ahane Camogie Under 12’s finished up their season on Thursday evening last with a pizza night at the clubhouse! They have had a fantastic year and have played great Camogie and represented the club so well throughout. The girls just completed five weeks of indoor training in Delta where Áine Reynolds and Judith Mulcahy helped the girls with their training and shared some words of wisdom with the girls! On behalf of the girls, they would like to say thank you to Áine and Judith for all their help and advice over the last five weeks!

Áine and Judith presented the girls with wall balls at the end of training so they can continue to practice over the winter at the wall ball in Mackey Park!

Huge thank you to the girls coaches, Lorraine Collins, Brian McNamara, Katherine Hussey, and Josephine Holland who have put so much time and effort into the girls over the year, it is greatly appreciated. We are looking forward to seeing you all back next year for another season packed full of Camogie, fun, friends and laugh

Over 35’s Hurling

We played out last game of 2019 on Saturday last in UL which was again attended very well given the time of year and other distractions. Another great game of 3 x 15 mins of hurling saw a win by a solitary point at the end of proceedings which is an indication to the evenness and competitiveness in some manners of the game. Referee John Meskell snr (who had the whistle firmly hidden away in his back pocket over the previous weeks games!) had difficulties keeping track of this free-scoring game which saw spells of fine skills, scores and set-up plays often evident, among the misses, poor touches and the odd mis-timed tackle! Well done again to all who took part on Saturday in the 7-aside game and indeed throughout the last few months.

We started out not knowing whether this over 35’s game would be a runner at all, but high numbers from the off and given the manner in which they were sustained into the winter period showed very positive and this proved a great outlet for the masses who became involved. While enjoying a simple game of hurling was to the forefront of this trial, it has proved to be a great physical outlet as, while the games are oft-time competitive and quick, the game certainly caters for all levels of fitness, skills and needs (to take a breather!)

Throughout the months, we have had many former Ahane hurlers join back playing having spent years away from the field which was great to see, while we have given the opportunity for new members to the parish to get involved. We have also had hurlers from outside the parish togging – from the nearest of neighbours in Murroe/Boher, Doon, Newport, Caherconlish, Cappamore and Ballybricken, to players from clubs a little further afield (to name a few) from Pallaskenry/Kildimo, Granagh/Ballingarry, Tournafulla, , Eire Óg Nenagh, Kildare, Bruff (via Ballyskenagh in Offaly), Hospital/Herberstown and some from the All-Blacks of Knockainey…while we included an official New Zealander as well who took up the game for the first time a few months back and with one of the last plays in the game last Saturday was indeed seen to dispossess former Limerick and All-star hurler Ollie Moran!

We are planning to resume playing again in January in UL again on Astro-turf Saturdays (3-4pm). Anyone interested in joining up please contact any of us at the following numbers or keep an eye on the Ahane social media outlets in the new year.
