AHANE GAA CLUB NOTES
U8 Hurlers End of Year
U8’s Hurlers – this year our U8 Hurlers trained every Monday night, and every 2nd Friday night – which was normally the night of the arranged matches. The players got to play games against 16 different local clubs from Limerick, Tipperary and Clare during 2019. A lot of hard work was put in by the young hurlers and this certainly showed in a lot of the hurling displays during this year. The group finished up with 4 weeks of indoor training at Delta sports dome with the final night on last Friday Nov 8th. All players received a presentation of a Wall ball & an Ahane hurler Rosette and are highly encouraged to use and train at home over the winter months with their wall ball – we would appreciate any spare time of parents and your encouragement that you can give them at home to facilitate this, it does show quite a bit when they come to the field. We have had a really enjoyable season but most important is that all the players left us in a most positive frame of mind and we look forward to starting off again in 2020.
All of the U8 players received their I’m an Ahane hurler rosette and a presentation of a wall ball on Friday night last as they finished their very enjoyable year of hurling. We wish to sincerely thank the parent that gave the private donation to the club to purchase the wall balls. The U8 mentors finished the season by encouraging the players to use and train at home over the winter months with their wall ball. U8 Mentors; John O’Connell, Mike Blackwell, Marty McPhail, William Brennan, Murna O’Malley & Ciaran Molloy.
Over 35’s Hurling
We had another great game of hurling last Saturday in UL with positive numbers allowing a 9-aside game. Again, there were some great passages of hurling with some fine scores and some even better misses over the 3 x 15mins halves of game.
We will resume playing on Saturday next, 16th of November in UL Astroturf (Maguire’s field) from 4-5pm. If you haven’t joined up yet and are keen on playing at some stage over the next few weeks, please keep an eye on our social media forums for updates and contact details to in order to get involved.
Ahane 1998 21st Anniversary celebration Evening
Ahane GAA club help a 21st anniversary celebration of the 1998 Senior County Hurling winning team in the Ahane GAA clubhouse on Saturday evening last.
The great crowd in attendance were treated to a very enjoyable evening put on by the club, hosted by resident MC’s John Meskell snr and Brian O’Mara.
The squad and management were presented with DVD copies of the game and other game highlights, along with a picture of pictures commemorating the historic game itself. The players took part in a Q&A which covered various “happenings” of the time and each were shown individual clips of the game relating. During the Q&A, 1998 winning captain Kevin Herbert remarked how he was already looking forward to the 1999 winning anniversary celebration!
The evening was indeed great gathering of the squad, management and committee members from that era and a moment well worth marking given it was such a significant victory for the club having gone so many baron years prior to 1998. Manager Eamonn Meskell spoke on behalf of the management, detailing the path that led to what was a great day for the whole parish, how it was born out of hard work, momentum and a fierce determination across the group.
It was also great to have many of the current committee present given the great work they are currently doing, on the back of the highly successful Oskar’s night the previous weekend – and a word of thanks must go to Chairman Colm Barry for his lovely words on the night.. A mention must also go to Blá Herbert who, as always, provided a top quality meal for all in attendance, to Gearoid and Seamus Harnett who proved the music in the bar and to all the bar staff on the night, all current playing members of the club. Special mention was also given to life-long supporters John and Aisling Mullaney and for those members who had involvements but since departed since 1998, including Eamonn Lawlor and Liam Minihan.
