Ahane GAA Club Notes:
East Junior B Hurling Championship:
Our Junior B Hurlers were crowned East Junior B Champions on Sunday afternoon after they ground out a hard fought win against South Liberties. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, the lads tapped over some early scores to get the score board moving. Six minutes in and we’d a goal scored. Niall Collins’ stunning effort nestled into the bottom corner and we were five points up and on a roll. Little did we know at that stage how important Niall’s goal would be in the end. Points from Conor Quirke and Fergus Ahern stretched the lead to seven before South Liberties got a point of their own. Johnny Meskell who came on to replace the injured Eanna Kennedy got a point and then we got another to keep the scores ticking over and the gap at eight points. The next two came from the Liberties men but Tom Doheny stalled their come back with a beauty from play to send us in 1-08 to 0-04 points ahead at half time. The second half got underway and playing against the strong wide proved to be difficult, so difficult that we only managed to score one point in the second half. But we worked hard all over the field to ensure that South Liberties struggled to get their scores easily. Sean Madden played a blinder in goal and his full back line of Cian O’Leary, Mike Hayes and Josh O’Keeffe were rock solid for the sixty plus minutes. South Liberties got the first three scores of the half and closed the gap to four points before we got our one and only point of the half as it started with Cian O’Leary at centre back, he past it to Kevin Berkery, who took off up the middle of the field, played a lovely pop pass to Tom Doheny and Tom fired it over much to the relief and delight of the Ahane crowd in attendance. South Liberties then went and got two points of their own and as the clock ticked into injury time the nerves were ramping up with the Ahane crowd. The lads did enough though to see the game out and came home as champions! They are not finished for the year though; they are in a County Quarter Final with details to be confirmed.
