Ahane GAA Club Notes:
Junior A Hurling County Championship:
Our Junior A hurlers took on Old Christians on Sunday in Monaleen. After a tough start where Old Christians got a goal after two minutes, we settled with a Niall Moran free. Niall scored a further six frees and then one from play in the first half. While Old Christians continued to tack on points of their own both from play and from frees. The moment of magic for Ahane came in the 33rd minute of the first half where David Carr ran up the side line, taking on a number of players before neatly slotting the ball into the bottom right-hand corner. His goal meant that we went in a point up at half time instead of two points down. Half time Ahane 1-08 Old Christians 1-07. The second half got underway and newly introduced Kevin Morrissey scored from a free while Old Christians scored a point from play. It was pretty much nip and tuck for the remainder of the half which saw Niall add to his personal tally for the day along with points from Kevin. 61 minutes on the clock and the game was level. Liam O’Meara got onto a breaking ball and managed to capitalise on it by getting the point to put Ahane ahead. The win was secured with a Kevin Morrissey point from a free. Full time Ahane 1-19 Old Christians 1-17.
Senior County Hurling Championship:
Our Senior hurlers played Kilmallock in the second round of the Bon Secours Senior Hurling County Championship in Doon on Thursday. We got the perfect start as Tom Morrissey put in serious work to keep the ball inside the 13, and Jack Butler lands on the breaking ball and rattled the net! Ronan Fox got his name on the score sheet as Kilmallock got two points to make it a two point game. Tom scored the next two points from frees and then assisted in a Mark Donnellan point. Tom and Ronan got a point each as Kilmallock scored from play. Ronan scored another great point before Kilmallock scored two on the bounce. Half time Ahane 1-07 Kilmallock 0-08. Kilmallock came out all guns blazing in the second half and scored a goal which we responded to with points from Tom but Kilmallock hit their purple patch and hit seven unanswered points which we didn’t have time to recover from. Full time Ahane 1-12 Kilmallock 1-19.
Junior B Hurling:
We travelled to Boher to take on Murroe Boher in the Junior B Championship. Tom Doheny scored our first point with our second coming from William O’Leary. Murroe Boher tapped over their own points and then got their first goal of the game. We didn’t let the heads drop though and we responded with a Colm Hough point. Murroe added a few more points and a goal before Shane Hackett scored a great point from the middle of the field. Half time Ahane 0-05 Murroe Boher 2-13. William O’Leary scored our only goal of the game with some lovely interlinking play between himself and Seamus Richardson. Seamus then scored a point of his own. Murroe however proved to be the much stronger side and tapped over a few more points and then in the 58th minute scored their third goal. Full time Ahane 1-12 Murroe Boher 3-20.
U19 Football:
Well done to our U19 footballers who had a great win last night over Sarsfields! Both sides played out a great game in less than ideal conditions as the rain poured throughout.
