AHANE GAA CLUB NOTES

East Senior Hurling League Round 3:
Ahane travelled to Cappamore to play Cappamore in the third round of the league. The game was slow to start with the score at the water break two points apiece. Again, it was fairly nip and tuck for the next fifteen minutes with our scores coming from Paul O’Halloran, Conor Morrissey, Mark O’Halloran, Dan Minehan and Aaron Hackett. Cappamore got some good scores and their centre back and keeper denied us on several occasions as they both had great games. Half time score Ahane 0-08 Cappamore 0-06. The second half got underway, and we drove through the middle and took a shot on goal which was saved by the keeper and put out for a 65’ which Ciaran Barry popped over. Minutes later we had a second opportunity at getting a goal but once again it was saved, however on our third time of asking we succeeded in getting the goal as Adam O’Brien landed a long range free into Aaron Hackett who slotted it home. We got more points from Aaron, Paul and Ciaran Barry while Cappamore kept their scores ticking over too. Score at the second water break was Ahane 1-13 Cappamore 0-09. The final fifteen minutes saw us get points from Ciaran Barry, Jeff Enright, Paul O’Halloran, and Aaron Hackett which saw us keep our lead and win out the game. Full time score Ahane 1-17 Cappamore 0-13.

East Intermediate Hurling League Round 3
Sunday morning saw us welcome Caherline to Mackey Park. On a beautifully sunny morning Caherline had the advantage of the strong breeze in the first half. We got our first point from Eanna Kennedy in response to Caherline’s first score. Kevin Morrissey also got a point along with Conor Morrissey who popped over two frees, one being a long range one against the wind. Caherline got some beautiful scores from all over the field. Score at the water break Ahane 0-05 Caherline 0-07. It was all Caherline for the second fifteen minutes as they scored seven unanswered points to leave the scores as Ahane 0-05 Caherline 0-14 at half time. The second half started and Caherline picked up where they left off. We did get some good ball into our forwards, but we just couldn’t make it stick. Points from Tom Doheny and Seamus Richardson kept our scores moving. Score at the second water break were Ahane 0-07 Caherline 0-20. Tempers started to rise in the final fifteen minutes and referee Kieran Flaherty had to issue three yellow cards, two for Caherline and one for ourselves. Mark Hickey got a great point for us along with Liam O’Mara who popped over a free as did Tom Doheny, but unfortunately it was too little too late as we had left ourselves with too big a mountain to climb. Caherline added on some more good points and when the final whistle blew the score was Ahane 0-10 Caherline 0-25. Huge credit must go to our six backs who did trojan work throughout the sixty minutes and cleared an ocean of ball.

East/City Junior B Hurling League Round 3
Our final game of the weekend was in Mackey Park v Ballybricken. A serious game of tough hurling was played out between the two teams. The first point was from Ballybricken Bohermore who added another from a free. Our first score came from Liam Ryan who had a serious game. We got more points from the ever-accurate Sean Madden and Seanie O’Connor. Ballybricken got their first of four goals in the 11th minute and their second goal came in the 14th minute. We did respond well with points from Sean Madden and Seanie O’Connor again. First water break the score was Ahane 0-06 Ballybricken Bohermore 2-03. It was much of the same for the second half with points coming from both teams and a yellow card shown to the Ballybricken number 4. Half time score was Ahane 0-09 Ballybricken Bohermore 2-05. Second half got underway, and Pat Minehan got us off to a flying start with a point. We will be disappointed with all the goal chances we missed, but credit to the Ballybricken Bohermore keeper for having a great game. Podge O’Connor got on the score sheet and levelled the game for us. We finally got our goal just before the second water break as James Hayes passed a great ball to Tom Dawson who slotted it to the back of the net. Score at the water break Ahane 1-11 Ballybricken Bohermore 3-06. The final fifteen minutes bought a serious amount of drama as Ballybricken Bohermore went down to 13 men due to two straight reds for separate incidents. Eanna Kennedy and Pat Minehan got points for us, but Ballybricken Bohermore got points of their own and were awarded a penalty which they hit home to make the final score Ahane 1-13 Ballybricken 4-08.

U13 Hurlers
Ahane u13 Hurlers got their season started Thursday evening the 24th of June with a really tough game away against Ballybrown played in Clarina. The game was played in great spirit and there were fantastic skills on show despite the heavy rain which fell all through the game. The Ahane side adapted well to the conditions and fought hard for every ball with some great hooking and blocking and last ditch defending. This was our u13’s 1st ever game of 15 a Side and great credit must go to all the boys for how they hurled. It wasn’t to be for the team however as they fell to a 3 point defeat on the night but can be really proud of how they performed and lost nothing in defeat. As they say they left everything on the pitch! Many thanks to all the parents for having the boys in Clarina for the match and for their support during the game. Great credit to all coaches who have put in a fantastic effort with the team. We’re all looking forward to watching this team progress!
U9 Footballers
Ahane u9 footballers had their first blitz of the season away to Na Piarsaigh on Friday the 25th of June. And what an exciting evening it was! Since training resumed this group have trained every Wednesday evening in Mackey Park and their skills and confidence have really come on. Great catching skills on show last night and each of the 3 sides put periods of passing play together. Ahane fielded three teams who played three matches each. Well done to all the boys and girls who put in such effort and also to our Gaelic football coaches whose efforts with the group are really paying off. Thanks also to the parents who brought the kids to the venue and supported and to our hosts. Photos on Facebook and Twitter
