AHANE GAA CLUB NOTES

East Senior Hurling League Round 1 v Doon
It was fantastic to be back playing club games and our first-round game v Doon provided a fast paced, high skilled game that all in attendance enjoyed! Doon came out strong and got some good scores from all over the field. We held our own though and with some fine points from Paul O’Halloran, Ciaran Barry, Niall Moran, and Willie Brennan. We got two goals in the space of as many minutes with Paul O’Halloran beating the Doon defence and slotting it home, to then being fouled inside the square and awarded a penalty which Niall Moran dutifully smashed to the back of the net. After a good half of hurling the teams went it at half time Ahane 2-07 Doon 0-12. Doon were the stronger team for the second half and at one stage lead by eight. But once again we never gave up and in the dying minutes of the second half, we levelled the game after Niall struck a free and it landed in the corner of the goal. But as was the theme of the evening every time we scored Doon would come back down the field and score again. We ran out of time in the end and the game ended on a score line of Ahane 3-18 Doon 2-22. East Intermediate Hurling League Round 1 v Ballybricken/Bohermore
Sunday saw our Junior A team travel to Ballybricken/Bohermore to take them on in the first round of the East Intermediate Hurling League. With temperatures hitting the 22 degrees mark everyone knew that it was going to be a tough battle. Both sides started well with points coming for their respective forwards. Both sets of defended played well with James Hayes doing well in goals for us keeping a clean sheet for our first game out. The Ballybricken/Bohermore keeper denied us three goals as he made some fantastic saves throughout the game. Ballybricken/Bohermore did start to up it a gear and by half time they were four points up. Half time score Ahane 0-06 Ballybricken/Bohermore 0-10. The temperatures never cooled, and tempers rose inside the white lines too as referee Liam O’Sullivan had to issue red cards to a played on both sides after an altercation near the sideline. Ballybricken/Bohermore took complete control of the second half after the first water break as they scored eight points to our one point. The game finished on a score line of Ahane 0-09 Ballybricken/Bohermore 0-22. Full match report can be found on our social media.
East/City Hurling League Round 1 v Fedamore
In our final game of the weekend, our Junior B team headed to Fedamore to play their first-round league game and what a performance they put in! There were some fabulous scores from both sides throughout the game. Fedamore got an early lead, but Liam O’Mara buried the ball into the back of the net for us and we were on our way! There was some fierce tackling and there was more than one hurley broken over the sixty plus minutes of action. Fedamore hit some lovely points with the centre forward having a great first half. James Hayes got our second goal and David Kennedy scored two beauties of points so that at half time was Ahane 2-05 Fedamore 1-10. Again, Fedamore started the quicker after the half time break but scores from Davy Laing, Seanie O’Connor and Podge O’Connor kept us in touch. Our six backs are to be commended for their excellent defending throughout the game and our forwards and midfield played out of their skin for the game. Our third and final goal of the game came once again from James Hayes as he pulled on the ground and the ball ended in the back of the net! The game finished on a score line of Ahane 3-08 Fedamore 1-19. This is the first time in 15 years we have had a Junior B team in the club
which also means we now have three adult teams in the club which is a fantastic achievement, and we are so proud of the lads!
East Intermediate Football League Round 1 v Cappamore
Our footballers were out on Tuesday evening in Cappamore for their opening game of the league. They battled hard throughout and came back from being 2-12 to 0-02 points down at the second half to ending the game with 3-16 to 1-10 meaning we won the second half by 1-08 to a goal. There were some great pieces of team play by the lads and they never once gave up. Not the way they wanted to start their league campaign but a huge amount of positives to be taken away from the game.
U14 Mr Binman Shield Final
Our U14’s completed their 2020 season on Saturday as they played Killacolla Gaels in Mick Neville Park. They got two goals in the first half to put them 2-04 to 0-07 ahead at half time. Although Killacolla Gaels came back in the second half and got two goals of their own and at the second water break there was only a goal between the sides. Our boys held strong though and came away with the win. Full time score Ahane 4-09 Killacolla Gaels 3-08.
