Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Club Notes:
Lenihan Second Half Goal Seals First Win For Cappagh:
COUNTY PREMIER JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 2 ROUND 3
CAPPAGH………….1-6
GRANAGH-BALLINGARRY…..0-6
A cracking goal by Jack Lenihan 12 minutes into the second half paved the way for a first win for Cappagh in group 2 of the Limerick County Premier Junior A Football Championship with a hard fought three point 1-6 to 0-6 victory over a very much under-strength Granagh-Ballingarry in wet and windy conditions at Pairc Caoimh Ui Luing Feenagh on Friday evening, to go joint third on the league championship table with the boys from Knockfierna on three points, one behind Newcastle West.
The Feenagh-Kilmeedy officials had their pitch in top class condition for this round 3 County Premier Junior A Football Championship tie played in front of a small crowd with Michael Woulfe of Patrickswell in charge. The Cappagh boys with the wind at their backs dominated the opening 9 minutes with a trio of white flags courtesy of Seamus O’Carroll (free) on 2 minutes, John Fitzgerald (play) on 5 minutes and Seamus O’Carroll (play) on 9 minutes. Both sides were guilty of inaccuracies before Aaron Smith opened the Granagh-Ballingarry boys’ account when he split the uprights from a placed ball to reduce the deficit to two, 0-3 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter. Four minutes later Granagh-Ballingarry’s No. 12 Aaron Smith split the uprights for the second time from a placed ball to leave one between the sides, Cappagh 0-3, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-2 on 20 minutes. The next score did not arrive for 6 minutes when Cappagh’s No. 10 Jack Lenihan, following a good solo run, split the uprights on 26 minutes to put his side two ahead. Both sides failed to add to their total in the difficult wet and windy conditions in the next four minutes to leave Cappagh in at the interval still two ahead, 0-4 to 0-2.
Granagh-Ballingarry with wind advantage made a good start to the second half with a second minute point from open play by Adam Long. The next 10 minutes belonged to man of the match Jack Lenihan of Cappagh with 1-2 from open play to extend his side’s advantage to six, 1-6 to 0-3 on 42 minutes. Both sides were guilty of inaccuracies before Aaron Smith added his third flag from a placed ball on 50 minutes to reduce the deficit to five, 0-4 to 1-6. A couple of wides were exchanged before Granagh-Ballingarry’s No. 9 Jack Cagney cut through the Cappagh defence only to see his kick for goal hit the post on 54 minutes, before he added on points from open play on 56 and 58 minutes to reduce the deficit to three, 1-6 to 0-6 with two minutes of normal time remaining. The Granagh-Ballingarry boys created a couple of goal scoring chances in the final few minutes to draw the game, which they failed to convert against a firm Cappagh defence. At the final whistle Cappagh were worthy three point, 1-6 to 0-6 winners to record their first win in Group 2 of the County Premier Junior A Football Championship to go joint third on the league championship table on three points with Granagh-Ballingarry, one behind Newcastle West.
Both sides are in action again tomorrow Thursday 24th August with Granagh-Ballingarry playing last year’s defeated finalist and tabletoppers Feenagh-Kilmeedy in Quaid Park, Coolyroe at 6.45pm and Cappagh are out against second from the bottom on two points Cappamore in Mungret at 6.45pm with a win a must for both sides to stay in contention for the knockout stages of the championship.
