Limerick footballers face Laois in Tailteann Cup quarter-final:

By John Keogh Limerick Leader Sport

LIMERICK’S senior footballers can make the Tailteann Cup semi-finals with a victory over Laois at the TUS Gaelic Grounds on this Saturday afternoon.

Mark Fitzgerald’s are favourites to win the game against the O’Moore County and a win would put them into the last four of the competition in their first appearance.

Limerick come into the game on the back of wins over Longford and Carlow that solidified top spot in group three. However, with a home quarter-final already in the bag, Limerick lost out to Wicklow in Portlaoise last time out.

“We wanted to keep the momentum going but we were very flat,” said Fitzgerald after the disappointing loss to Wicklow. “Any day you lose, it’s a disappointing one and for whatever reason, we were a bit off it. The fact that we were already in a quarter-final may have had something to do with it.

“The beauty of the next round now is that it’s knock out and if we produce another performance like that, we won’t be going any further.

“It wasn’t all negative. We had some good performances. We are trying to build a squad and when you are trying to bring lads through, you have to give them a bit of exposure. We did a few good things but not enough.”

Laois have made their way to this stage having finished third in group one of the Tailteann Cup. Billy Sheehan’s side then pulled off a bit of a surprise with a1-11 to 1-9 win over Fermanagh in their preliminary quarter-final last weekend.

Mark Timmins fired 1-2 in the victory for Sheehan’s men and will be looking for a similar return on Saturday evening. Mark Barry also made a telling contribution with two late points that secured the win.

The game has a 3pm start and is will be available to watch via GAAGO.
