In difficult wet conditions under lights at Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale on Friday night Newcastle West recorded a hard fought seven-point victory over gallant Granagh Ballingarry in the final game of group 4 in the Limerick County U21 A Hurling Championship to finish top of the group on three points to qualify for quarter-final meeting with group 3 second place team South Liberties/Crecora-Monister and Granagh Ballingarry second on one point play group 3 top place team Murroe-Boher.
A good crowd turned out to watch their final group 4 stage game despite the rain played on an excellent pitch with Joe Mulcahy of Killeedy in charge. The opening 15 minutes at Mick Neville Park were close and exciting with points traded by Ethan Hurley (play) and Michael Russell (free), Con Hayes (play) and Gerard Lynch (play), Luke Flynn (play) and John O’Grady (play) for 0-3 each. The first and only green flag of the game arrived through Newcastle West no.13 Con Hayes on 18 minutes before white flags were traded by Con Hayes (free) on 20 mins and Luke Flynn (free) three minutes later to leave the Newcastle West boys three ahead 1-4 to 0-4 on 23 minutes. Both sides were guilty of inaccuracy for seven minutes before Con Hayes of Newcastle West finally found the range when he split the uprights from a placed ball one minute into added time sending the magpies in at the interval leading by four 1-5 to 0-4. On the resumption of play a pair of white flags for the Newcastle West boys from open play through Ruadhon O’Connor on 31 minutes and John Whelan on 32 minutes were cancelled out by Michael Russell from a placed ball on 34 minutes and Luke Flynn from a 65 on 36 minutes before white flags were traded by Con Hayes (free) on 39 minutes and Luke Flynn (free) on 41 minutes, Luke Flynn (free) on 43 minutes and Brain Foley (play) two minutes later to leave the magpies still few ahead 1-9 to 0-8 at the end of the third quarter.
The Newcastle West boys now began to up their game with four unanswered white flags through Con Hayes (free) 48 minutes, Conor Walter (play) on 51 minutes and man of the match Con Hayes (play) on 54 and 57 minutes to bring his tally for the game to 1-7 (0-4 frees) before Luke Flynn split the uprights from a placed ball on 60 minutes which was too little too late for the Granagh Ballingarry boys and referee Joe Mulcahy sounded the final whistle shortly after to leave the Newcastle West boys seven point 1-13 to 0-9 winners to finish top of group 4 in the limerick County U21 A Hurling Championship on three points to qualify for a quarter final meeting with group 3 top team South Liberties/ Crecora-Manister and Granagh Ballingarry second on one point play group 3 top team Murroe-Boher. Newcastle West scored 1-9 from play and 0-4 from frees. Granagh Ballingarry scored 0-4 from play, 0-4 frees and 0-1 from a 65.

Race Night
Granagh/Ballingarry club is going to the races!
In conjunction with our partners in Granagh/Ballingarry Ladies Football and Camogie, the three clubs are hosting a joint race night in the Longcourt Hotel, Newcastlewest on Friday 30th November at 8.30pm. Two lucky winners will take home 1,000 each. All proceeds from the night will go towards the club’s new training field. Individual sponsorship is available for 1,000 for a full page and an ad in our booklet is 200 and 100 for a half page. To enter a horse is 50 which entitles you to name your horse owner, trainer and jockey. This is the first Christmas and new year since 2019 without Covid related restrictions, so we hope this can act as a social event for all within the community to meet and greet neighbours and friends especially those who are home for the holiday season. There was no winner of the €7,200 jackpot in the Granagh Ballingarry GAA Club Lottery on Saturday 12th November. The numbers drawn were2, 4, 7 and 24.
