LIAM MACCARTHY VISIT
Mungret St. Pauls were delighted to have the Liam MacCarthy and the U-20 Munster cup come to the community centre on Saturday 15 October. It was great to see familiar club members along with people from the local community coming in to get their chance to meet the Liam MacCarthy cup and getting their photos taken with it. We were delighted to have Rory Duff attend as a member of the Limerick Senior Hurling panel along with Brian O’Meara, Barry Duff and Liam Lynch being members on the U-20 Hurling panel. There was great excitement in the club as the victorious U-17 hurlers were there celebrating with family and friends after their win.
GAELSCOIL AN RAITHIN
Gaelscoil an Ráithín won Division 2 of the Laurel Hill Secondary School “Primary School Camogie Blitz” last Thursday.
There was a super performance put in by the #MSPCamogie Girls! They had the chance to hold the Liam Mc Carthy Cup yet again, and even made the time to oblige Nickie Quaid when he asked to have his photo taken with them!
And we were delighted to have the winning cup come to training that night too! These kids can’t get enough camogie – HOOK IT TO THEIR VEINS!!!
Thanks to our #MSPCamogie Registrar, Teacher and Coach Aileen Nestor also!
The future of camogie is indeed bright!
CAMOGIE
A fantastic day in Ahanes Mackey Park on Saturday for the Limerick Camogie Development, Tesco Ireland County Festival Day!
There was a serious standard of camogie seen throughout the day and our girls did us all proud!
Thanks to Ahane for hosting and to Margaret Bourke and Jack Ward for organising! The future is indeed bright!
FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENTS
Saturday morning saw the club launch a new Fundamental Movement Skills programme aimed at early primary school aged children. An enthusiastic group of almost 50 children took part in the first session, and their energy and engagement was wonderful to see.
Fun and movement are the main aims of this programme, and new members are very welcome to come and give it a try. The sessions run from 9-10am on Saturday mornings on the pitch behind the clubhouse until Halloween. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact Mike (086 3929232). Coaches who can spare an hour on a Saturday over the next few weeks are also welcome to drop by and help out.
CONDOLENCES
It is with great sadness that we learned last evening of the sad passing of Joe Harrington, a familiar face on the sideline of our GAA pitches. Joe was a passionate GAA man who loved to attend club and county games, and while he celebrated Limerick’s recent victories he remained a proud Rebel. Joe was a fantastic supporter of Mungret St. Pauls and our efforts to improve facilities and the current development, always available to volunteer for anything that was needed but mostly he loved the game and supporting his children’s in their games, all of whom he was rightly proud of. If unable to attend a club match he would ensure he was kept updated with the scores on twitter or messages from supporters present, always followed by a phone call for a proper match review. Joe will undoubtedly be with us in spirit as the Club develops on and off the field. No words can describe the immense sense of loss felt by Joe’s passing, he will be greatly missed by his family, his friends and the Mungret St Pauls and Ballinhassig GAA Community’s, however he has left us all in a better place for knowing him.
Mungret St. Pauls would like to express their deepest Sympathies to Joe’s wife Aileen, children Liam, J.J. and Rosa, extended family and many friends.
U-17 HURLING
Mungret St. Pauls 2-13 Monaleen 1-13
It was very mixed weather on Saturday 15 October 2022 in Mick Neville Park. It started sunny and dry with a breeze but the second half saw a the cold rain hitting the players when Monaleen and Mungret St. Pauls fought it out to see who would be presented the Sean O’Connor cup.
Mungret St. Pauls did not have a great first half with Monaleen beating our players to be first to the ball and on occasions winning the puck outs. The scores stayed level for the first 10 minutes with the ball seeing both ends of the pitch. On the eleventh minute Monaleen hit a strong shot that nearly left a hole in the back of the net. There was another exchange of points between the sides with Monaleen getting one extra leaving them four points ahead when the 30 minutes, Monaleen had attempted another two bullets to the net but they were a few inches wide of the post and waved wide. In the last minute of injury time Mungret St. Pauls stepped up the challenge of scoring a three pointer but this shot was saved by the Monaleen goalie and bounded back out to one of the Mungret St. Pauls forwards who took on the goalie and got the ball over the line to leave just one point between the two sides by the half time whistle, 1-7 to 1-8
Mungret St. Pauls did not waste time as they came out and leveled the game straight away. It was another tight 30 minutes with plenty of tussles on the pitch and with the cold rain starting to fall the scores were slowing down and with the breeze favouring Monaleen this half. There were some impressive acute angle scores on both sides, five of Mungret St. Pauls six points in this half came from frees while Monaleen were forced to rely on scores from play, in total only three of their 13 points came from frees. With four minutes of normal time left time seemed to speed up as both sides were level and both teams looking for that one last minute score to take the win rather than prolonging the game into extra time and wouldn’t you know it yet another short ball into the Monaleen goalie who fumbled it onto the ground and a quick thinking Mungret St. Pauls player got their hurley to it and delivered it to the net to leave the Mungret St. Pauls supporters jumping around with excitement and now willing the full time whistle while Monaleen were looking to take the ball up to the other side of the pitch to do damage to the score bit they did not successful and with the full time whistle came the elated shouts from the Mungret St. Pauls supporters and players as realisation hit they had taken the County Minor title for the first time in 27 years. Captain Fintan Fitzgerald accepted the Sean O’Connor, in memory of Leo O’Connors father, presented by Leos son, Sean. Well done to all the players, their coaches and everyone else who has helped out the team.
Team; Conor Crowley, Robert O’Brien, Conor Collins, Jake Stack, Tom Lloyd, Cian Maloney, Mark O’Brien (0-9, 0-7 frees) James Houlihan (1-0), Diarmuid Hynes (0-2), Sean Duff (0-1), Fintan Hynes (0-1), Christopher McSweeney (1-0), Darragh Hogan, Luke Walsh, Brian Hassett, Evan McInerney, Conor Morgan, Muiris Ahern, Liam Scully, Jay Moroney, Dylan O’Donoghue, Conor Mangan, Rory Mullins, James Flemming.
U-14 HURLING
Well done to our U-14 hurlers who travelled to Craughwell in Co. Galway to play three great challenge matches against Kilruane McDonaghs, Kilmaley and hosts Craughwell. While no score was recorded, Mungret St. Pauls dominated in each of the matches, this was very well run and an excellent way for our U-14s to get in some games long after their own had finished. Thank you to all the coaches/ parents who travelled to Galway.
