Round 4 premier intermediate hurling Newcastlewest 1-15 Effin 0-13
Round 4 of the championship took place in Feenagh last Thursday evening. It was a beautiful evening and the pitch was in great shape so there were no excuses. Our lads started slow enough again and Effin looked the sharper throughout the first 20 minutes. Indeed NCW looked in a lot of trouble after 20 minutes when we trailed 9 pts to 3. However in the last 10 minutes of the first half we got to grips with our opponents and we trailed by 3 at the break 11 pts to 8.
The second half showed a much improved performance. With the half back line of Michael Cremin ,Todd Donovan and the outstanding Ethan Hurley taking over, it gave us a platform in the game. Ruadhan o Connor and the returning Diarmuid Kelly worked very hard at midifeld and we got a stranglehold in the game. The breakthrough score was the goal. After great work by Mike Mcmahon Eoin Hurley finished to the net and we never relinquished the lead after this. There was some mighty defending towards the end with Arron Neville, William Hurley and Maurice Murphy prominent in the last line of defence. All in all a very satisfying result for the lads which keeps them firmly in the hunt for an elusive semi final place. There are 3 tough games coming up aginst Bruff Dromin Athlacca and Knockainey so there is still a lot of hurling to be done but the lads have showed great spirit to date and we look forward to the games coming thick and fast.
NCW Panel: Michael Quilligan Aaron Neville William Hurley Maurice Murphy Todd Donovan Ethan Hurley (0-7 6f) Michael Cremin Ruadhan O Connor Thomas Quilligan Brain Hurley Conor Walker(0-1) Diarmuid Kelly (0-2) Con Hayes (0-4 1f) Eoin Hurley(1-1) Mike Mcmahon James Kelly Michael Blashkiv Jack O Connor Brian Foley James Lyons John Whelan Leon Barry Shaun Browne.
