HISTORIC MINOR HURLING CROWN FOR BALLINGARRY IN 1971
The following is a record of some the 1971 Limerick County Hurling and Football Championship Finals with Ballingarry winning a first ever minor hurling title defeating Kilmallock 4-5 to 1-8 in the decider, and Claughaun, a great triple senior hurling and football double and U16 football title.
County Senior Hurling Championship Final 1971
Claughaun 6-6, South Liberties 2-13
The large attendance at the Limerick County Senior Hurling Championship final in 1971 at Pairc na nGael on 12th December enjoyed every moment of a most exciting and sportingly contested game that only switched the Claughaun boys’ way in the closing minutes for a five point 6-6 to 2-13 victory to take their ninth Limerick County Senior Hurling Championship title in the John Daly Cup for the first time since 1968.

County Senior Football Championship Final 1971
Claughaun 2-12, Oola 1-2.
Claughaun and Oola met in the Limerick County Senior Football Championship Final for the second successive year in 1971 not played until 21st May 1975 at Pairc na nGael. It was a disappointing decider which resulted in Claughaun claiming their sixth and back-to-back Limerick County Senior Football Championship title over Oola with a comfortable 2-12 to 1-2 victory to complete the County Senior Hurling and Football Championship double in 1971.

County Junior Hurling Championship Final 1971
Monaleen 3-12, Dromin/Athlacca 4-5
City champions Monaleen recaptured the Irish Press Cup after a gap of ten years on December 5th 1971 at the expense of South champions Dromin/Athlacca who they beat 3-12 to 4-5 to claim their second Limerick County Junior Hurling Championship title, a first since 1961.

County Junior Football Championship Final 1971
Carrickerry 2-8, Pallasgreen 1-5
West Limerick champions Carrickerry took their lone Limerick County Junior Football Championship title in 1971 beating east champions Pallasgreen by six points 2-8 in the final not played until May 21st 1972.

County U21 Hurling Championship Final 1971
Patrickswell 1-13, Doon 2-7 (draw)
In 1971 city champions Patrickswell made it back-to-back Limerick County U21 Hurling Championship Final wins over Doon by 1-13 to 2-7 to claim their third title in the delayed 1971 decider at Kilmallock on March 8th 1972.

County U21 Football Championship Final
Oola 2-6, Carrickerry 1-6
West champions Carrickerry bravely made a bid to add the Limerick County U21 Football Championship title to the junior title won in 1971 but failed when going under to east champions Oola by three points 2-6 to 1-6 in the 1971 County U21 Football decider at Pairc na nGael on October 8th 1972 for a third County U21 Football crown for the Oola boys, a first since 1968.

County Minor Hurling Championship Final 1971
Ballingarry 4-5, Kilmallock 1-8
A new name was inscribed on the Limerick County Minor Hurling trophy at Pairc na nGael on 12th September 1971 where Ballingarry beat Kilmallock by 4-5 to 1-8 in a thrilling and exciting decider an hour of swaying fortunes with the lead alternating several times and the issue always in doubt. Kilmallock dominated the first half but were only ahead by three points 1-4 to 1-1 at the interval. The Ballingarry boys resumed in a whirlwind fashion and edged ahead with scores from Michael John Hourigan (1-0) and Joe Fitzgerald (0-2) Kilmallock regained the lead with nine minutes remaining on the clock were two points ahead. Ballingarry winners of the county juvenile title in 1969 staged an all-out rally and the spark they really needed came in the 21st minute of the second half when Michael Healy soloed his way through the Kilmallock defence before passing to John Cagney for a great goal. Then points from Joe Fitzgerald and Mike Chawke plus a late goal from Peter Dunworth clinched the issue in Ballingarry’s favour for a thrilling six point 4-5 to 1-8 victory for the boys in green and gold to claim a first ever Limerick County Minor Hurling Championship title to add to the county juvenile title won in 1969 by the same panel of players. After the game Ballingarry winning captain Davy Clifford received the Limerick County Minor Hurling Championship Cup amid great scenes of jubilation.

Cul Camp
The Granagh/Ballingarry Club camp will take place in the club grounds in Ballingarry from Monday July 5th to Friday 9th July. Booking is now accepted online at www.kellogscukamps.gaa.ie/booking.
€13,300 Jackpot on Saturday
There was no winner of the €13,200 jackpot in the Granagh/Ballingarry GAA club lottery held on Saturday 22nd May. The numbers drawn were 5, 10 19 and 26. Lucky dips of €20 each went to Mairéad Snow promoter Snow’s shop, Vincent O’Keeffe promoter Mossie and Pat Kevin Carroll promoter Niall Carroll, Dave McCarthy promoter Michael Clancy.
Disappointing weekend in National League
It was a most disappointing weekend for both Limerick senior footballers and hurlers in the National League on Saturday. The Limerick senior footballers travelled to O’Connor Park, Tullamore where they were most unlucky to go under to the home-side Offaly by two points, 0-16 to 1-11 in Round 2 of Division 3 South.
We wish team manager Billy Lee and all involved with the Limerick senior footballers as they travel to Aughrim this Saturday May 29th to play the home-side Wicklow at 3pm in the third and final round and a victory for the Limerick side will see them back in contention for a semi final spot.
All Ireland hurling champions Limerick suffered their second straight defeat in Division 1A of the National League when going under to Waterford by four points, 1-22 to 0-, a result that ends their hope of a hat-trick of league titles. Manager John Kiely and all involved with the Limerick senior hurlers will be hoping to get back on winning ways when they clash with neighbours Cork in Round 4 of the National League on Saturday 5th June in Pairc na nGael at 7.15pm.
Sympathy
Granagh/Ballingarry GAA club officials, players and members extend sympathy to the Meehan family, the Downes’, Ballingarry and the Donovan Houlihan and Mulqueen family, Granagh, on the death of Peter Meehan. Peter played hurling in his youth and was a great support of all Granagh/Ballingarry club teams down through the years.
