MONALEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
SENIOR FOOTBALLERS: Best of luck to the Monaleen senior footballers and management team in their county quarter-final fixture against Ballylanders in Bruff on Saturday next at 2pm.
COVID-19: Due to the recent increase in COVID 19 cases around the country, Monaleen GAA Club would like to remind players and parents of the process involved in dealing with a suspected or confirmed case. Anyone who develops symptoms should self isolate and contact their GP for advice.
They should not attend any GAA activities while they await the results of the test. If the test is negative, no further action is required. The player in question can return to GAA activity once symptom free for 48 hours.
If the test is positive, then public health officials will do an assessment and identify close and casual contact. Close contacts must not attend any GAA activity until cleared to do so by medical professionals. Casual contacts should monitor symptoms closely and are free to attend GAA activity, unless symptomatic. It is very important that all team personnel complete the GAA health questionnaire and adhere to all guidelines, including a home temperature check, before coming to training or matches.
We would ask all members to be vigilant of symptoms and, if they do develop, to self isolate and seek medical advice. If anyone has any questions please contact the club’s Covid Officer, Daniel Power at 085 8389170. We thank you all for your co-operation in these challenging times.

The team started well in the early exchanges and took the early lead 2-02 to 0-1 in the first quarter. Monaleen continued to dominate around the middle and kept the scoreboard ticking over, reaching half time with a score line of 2-09 to 0-4. Monaleen made a number of changes and Killeedy made a better start after the half time break, outscoring Monaleen by 2 points to 1 in the third quarter, so at the 2nd water break the scoreboard read 2-10 to 0-6. The girls pushed on in the final quarter and with some great teamwork they scored 5 points, the final score was 2-15 to 0-6. U14A: Mackey Championship Semi Final: On Sunday afternoon our U14A team made it through to the county final with a hard fought win over a determined Newcastlewest side. In ideal conditions for camogie neither team had much time to catch their breath as the game flowed from end to end for the hour. A good start by Monaleen with a goal inside a minute but Newcastlewest responded with a goal themselves after we failed to clear a ball after winning possession in the fullback line. This rallied the opposition & they scored a point from the next play to edge ahead. A well pointed free and a great point from the narrowest of angles pushed Monaleen back in front again. The game was tight & chances were hard to come by but another point for Monaleen left the score at 1-03 to 1-01 at the 1st water break. On the restart a point by NCW narrowed the margin to one before a period of sustained pressure from the forwards resulted in 3 further scores for the red & whites, 2 for Ciara & one for Niamh. Despite a shaky start the backs were now settling into the game & working hard with some great blocks & tackles. Faye was solid between the sticks and dealt with any danger that came her way. After a frantic 30 minutes we led by 1-06 to 1-03 at half time and knew we were going to have to battle until the final whistle. We started the 2nd half well and good points from Sarah & Alice gave us some breathing space and we followed up with a good goal minutes later to ease into an 8 point lead before NCW scored a good point to stay within touching distance. 2-08 to 1-04 the score at the 2nd water break.
A point by Monaleen on the restart was cancelled out by Newcastlewest before 2 points by Ellie & Saoirse increased the lead with time running out. A good point from Sarah after some great work from the Monaleen girls in the middle of the field all but secured the game but a goal from NCW with a few minutes remaining kept the girls on their toes. A tough battle from start to finish & a great match as preparation for the county final next week. Well done to all the girls for never giving up the fight. Final Score Monaleen 2-12 Newcastlewest 2-05. U12 CHALLENGES: Monaleen U12 camogie played two challenges over the week with contrasting fortunes. This started with a win away to Cappamore On Tuesday and a defeat away to a very strong Newcastlewest team on Sunday. Both matches showed a great exhibition of striking, catching and work rate from all sides. This Monaleen team will benefit greatly from the games and will look to carry lessons learned in to future games over the coming weeks. Squads over the two days included. LADIES FOOTBALL
JUNIORS: The Groody Gaels ladies junior team played Gerald Griffins in the quarter final of the county Junior championship in sunny Banogue on Sunday afternoon last (13th September). Following some superb score taking and a super overall team performance, Groody Gaels came out on top to earn a well-deserved win on a scoreline of 12-15 to 01-01. Groody Gaels made a very impressive start to the game with early scores to take a commanding lead in the first 15 minutes of the game. For the second time this season, all 6 forwards registered scores in the first half of the match, a super achievement for any forward line. While playing with a strong breeze, Groody continued to force the pace and as the game approached half time, they extended their lead on the scoreboard to go to the break leading by 7-10 to 1-0. At the start of the second half, Gerald Griffins made use of the strong breeze to threaten the Groody goal but excellent defending from the Groody backs maintained their control of the match. Super interplay between the Groody Gaels midfielders and forwards was rewarded with some very well executed scores throughout the second half. At the final whistle, Groody were deserved winners and progress to meet Adare in the county semi final on September 26th.
