SOUTH LIBERTIES GAA CLUB NOTES
U14 Hurling
South Liberties U14 hurlers played their first championship game of the 2019 season away to Na Piarsaigh last Wednesday night. This team has been training since February but had only played one challenge game due to the bad weather so players and coaches were a bit nervous of rustiness heading into the game. With a strong breeze blowing straight down the field Captain Ben Compton took the brave decision to play against the wind in the first half. Na Piarsaigh took an early two point lead and against the strong wind we were finding it difficult to get the sliothar out of our defense. The opening 10 minutes of the game we struggled to get a foothold in the match. Slowly we steadied the ship and started to create a few chances which the Na Piarsaigh defense repelled. Midway through the half Oisin Quinlivan pulled on a ball close to the goal and rattled the net for our first goal. This score gave us confidence and with some clever team work we managed to work the sliothar up field from defense to attack and added another 1-04 to our score to see us lead at the break 2-04 to 0-05.
With the wind at our backs for the second half we dominated possession and territory with the young Na Piarsaigh side finding it very hard to get into the game. We picked off some very good scores and it was great to see that the lads had picked up in the training sessions what the mentors were coaching them in preseason. We won out comfortably in the end but we know we will face stiffer opposition in future games. Hard luck to a gallant Na Piarsaigh side and they will also have better days.
