Club Result:
Woodlands House Hotel County Junior C Football Championship- Final
Athea 2-7 South Liberties 2-10
We made the trip to Feenagh on Saturday November 8th 2025 to face South Liberties in the County Junior C Final and, despite our strong second-half performance, we came up just short as South Liberties held on for a three-point win.
The starting team was very similar to semi-final however Mike Reidy started the game replacing the injured Ger Collins. Mike was busy throughout trying to stem the early onslaught from South Liberties who started the brighter and were sharp in front of goal, with their full forward causing problems early on. After trading opening points — Jason Kelly getting Athea’s first — they struck for a goal to take control. They added a series of points, including a couple of long-range frees, to open an eight-point lead by the16th minute.
We hit back midway through the half when James Broderick finished a penalty to the net and Aidan Curry knocked over a free late in the half. Neilus Hunt came on in the first half and helped steady things around midfield. but South Liberties finished stronger to lead 1–8 to 1–2 at half time.
The second half began with another goal for South Liberties after two minutes followed by a free after 9 minutes, extending their advantage to ten points. This proved to be their last point of the match. From there, Athea fought back well, with the inform Jason Kelly adding two more fine points from play while Aidan Curry added a free. Alan Kelly then struck for a well-taken goal to give Athea hope heading into the final minutes.
Rory Cleary and Jim Ahern came on as replacements to add energy to the side.
Aidan Curry landed a two pointer free from way out to narrow the margin to three points early into stoppage time as we continued to dominate possession late on. We had opportunities in the last few minutes but unfortunately couldn’t narrow the gap further. South Liberties’ early cushion proved enough, and they held out to win and become champions on a scoreline of 2–10 to 2–7.
There was a great turn out of supporters from Athea to witness a very spirited performance by our lads who played fifteen or sixteen games this year and entertained us all the way. There are a few players in this team well capable of challenging for a place in the Junior A team next year.
Thanks to John Hunt and manager and Tommy Quaid and Brian O Connor as selectors for their great work throughout the year with this team.
The club had 45 players playing their part in the two adult teams this year and valuable experience was gained by a number of the younger players which will stand to them going forward. Team Tomas Ahern, Cillian O’Connor, Philip Daly, Michael Tierney, Jamie Collins, Conor Fitzgerald, Gavin Ambrose, Michael Walsh, Martin Chawke, Mike Reidy, Alan Kelly 1-0, David O Connor, Jason Kelly 0-3, James Broderick 1-0, Aidan Curry 0-4 (1tpf, 0-2f) Subs used: Neilus Hunt, Rory Cleary, Jim Ahern Other Subs: Dan McMahon, Jack Sexton, Colm Hassett, Thomas McEnery, Ger Collins.
