A tribute to a Chris Browne by Andrew Grene:
It was a very good turn of fortune, when over 50 years ago Chris and her husband Tim, who were both originally from Clare decided to settle in the parish of Ballybricken and Bohermore, on returning home to Ireland from San Francisco, with a young family. Chris was first and foremost a great neighbour and friend, to so many people over the years and engaged easily, with the different generations.
Her love of, and interest in, Gaelic games was a key part of her life. And her children followed suit when they played for the club, which is now following through with both her Limerick and Clare grandchildren. It was a great source of joy to her, that locally we had lots of success at both juvenile and adult levels, winning East and County titles. And she always remained very loyal to The Banner County, delighted with the All Ireland wins of the 90’s, where she was hugely proud of her nephew and wing back on that side, Liam Doyle of Bodyke. And equally so with their more recent wins, and no doubt she did quietly enjoy the rise of Limerick as well.
She was well able to swing the hurl herself, having played at home in her youth, and was involved in the 1970’s when the parish had a Camoige team for a couple of years.
There were no favourites when it came to matches locally, and you would always get an honest review from her.
Chris died suddenly at home last week, and likely to be the way she would have been happy to go. She will be a big loss to both her immediate and extended family, along with her wider circle of friends and neighbours. The esteem in which she was held was reflected in the guard of honour, Ballybricken Bohermore club had at her removal.
A big thank you to her family, for giving members, the opportunity to shoulder her coffin at the removal. A fitting send off to our club stalwart and supporter. Farewell Chris, and may the road rise to meet you.
