St. Kierans GAA Club Notes:

County Senior Football Championship Round 4:
St. Kierans 0.10 Kildimo/Pallaskenry 2.14
The senior footballers made the short journey to Askeaton on a sunny Saturday last for round 4 of the County Championship. We came into the game undefeated with two wins and a draw from our three games to date against a Kildimo side who have always proven to be extremely difficult opposition for us in the championship. We began the game brightly racing into a two point lead and playing some good football in the opening ten minutes winning a lot of the duels throughout the field against the city division side. Once Kildimo got on the scoresheet they began to grow in confidence throughout the field as we began to find it difficult to cope with their movement and energy throughout the park and struggle to break down their defence. Disaster struck on the twenty fifth minute as Kildimo found the back of the net to increase their lead to five. This would increase to eight before a late Adam Lacey point meant we went in at the interval trailing by seven points. Despite a good start to the first half, we struggled for much of the half. we began the second half brightly with two-point scores from John Hayes getting us back into the game and our deficit was down to three points as we began to play with energy and physicality in the opening quarter. Kildimo powered by Limerick senior trio Cathal Downes, Tony McCarthy and Peter Nash were in no mood to relinquish their lead and soon recovered and extended their lead to six points. Throughout the field Kildimo were playing with greater energy and enthusiasm and we found it extremely hard to cope with their runners. A second Kildimo goal was the final nail in the coffin as they would extend their lead to twelve points before two late John Hayes frees reduced our deficit to ten at the final whistle on what was a very difficult afternoon. We currently sit in third position on five points with one round remaining where we face off against Mungret / St. Pauls on October 11. Mungret are assured of qualification to the knockout stages following a comprehensive victory over Ballylanders while Newcastlewest secured their passage following a draw with Galtee Gaels in round 4. Victory over Mungret in round 5 will assure a return to the knockout stages of the championship for the first time since 2022.

County Junior ‘A’ Football Championship Round 4:
St. Kierans 2.14 Hospital/Herbertstown 3.11
The Junior footballers resumed their championship campaign on Sunday afternoon as they took on table toppers Hospital / Herbertstown in Ballyagran. Ballyagran has been a happy hunting ground for St. Kieran’s at all levels in recent years and we maintained this good form on Sunday as we salvaged an invaluable point recovering from a five-point deficit at the interval. Fielding a strong side as we welcomed back several players following absence in round 3 we began the game brightly and led by a point with five minutes to go in the opening half before a late two goal flurry from the south Limerick side left us trailing by five at half time. Cathal McEnery maintained his good championship form getting on the score sheet once more to find the back of the net for our opening goal of the game while Anthony Molyneaux fresh from his exploits with Limerick Masters in their All-Ireland campaign showed razor sharpness in front of goal once again. We began the second half brightly and soon began to eat into the Hospital lead as Darragh McMahon found the back of the net for our second goal. Cillian Heffernan made his return to the side following a period in New Zealand and will make a welcome addition to the squad. We worked hard throughout the field against the pacy Hospital side, many of whom had experienced disappointment last weekend in the County Intermediate Hurling Championship ¼ final defeat to Feohanagh. Despite this the longer the game went on the more confident we grew and played some excellent football. James O’ Connor and Jack Harnett switched roles at half time, and both began to flourish in their new positions as we began to make some headway playing an excellent brand of football. With two minutes remaining we took the lead, and it looked as if we were about to secure direct passage to the County Semi-Finals. The south Limerick side would equalize once more and subsequently take the lead before a late Kieran’s point would tie up the game at the final whistle. With three wins and a draw from our four games to date we are joined alongside Hospital on seven points but as we have a superior score difference, we sit in first position within the group with one game remaining. In our final group game, we face challenging opposition in Camogue Rovers. The south Limerick side are bolstered by the addition of Bruff to their ranks this campaign and will undoubtedly provide us with a stern test. Victory over the south Limerick side will guarantee a semi-final berth.
