Intermediate Footballers Win Again as Hurlers Prepare for County Semi Final:
Griffin Coaches County Intermediate Football Championship Group 1
Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan 3-14 Dromcollogher/Broadford 0-09
Game four of the group saw us face off with Drom-Broadford up in Ballyagran on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal for football, and it was Drom Broadford who got off to a quickfire start. Jack Pierce got the first point of the day for Drom Broadford as they raced into a three-point lead inside the first few minutes. Gradually we started to get more of a grip around the middle with Alan McGrath spreading the ball around and Padhraic McMahon put us on the board with a booming two-point effort followed quickly by a nicely taken Sam Colgan score worked down the right side. A goalmouth scramble saw Drom Broadford come close to an opening goal but Brian Neville kept his goal in tact and the pendulum swung Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornans way when Danny Neville received a nice ball in deep, he turned his man and engaged the afterburners to cut through on goal and dispatch past Garrett Noonan to raise the green flag and give us a lead we wouldn’t relinquish. Scoring was at a premium in the ten minute spell before half time as we added two points from Joey Rushe and David O’Shaughnessy that saw us go in with a five point lead at the break.
Half time Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 1-06 Dromcollogher Broadford 0-04.
After the half time break both teams exhibited a huge work rate and cancelled each other out with Padhraic McMahon matching a Drom Broadford point on the 40 minute mark. Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan though would be the ones who pressed on the accelerator adding 1-4 to 2 points. The goal came from a lovely team move, Niall Barry was dogged all game long and another ball won by him was worked through the lines to Joey Rushe who popped a lovely reverse ball over the top to David O’Shaughnessy who finished with aplomb, he added a point and Joey popped over two frees from out on the right to give us a ten point lead at the 50 minute mark. Drom Broadford continued to throw players forward and with the deficit at ten were looking for goals and they almost got one when they took advantage of a turnover only for an excellent Brian Neville save turning the ball over the bar. Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan introduced some fresh legs with Bill Casey, Callum Daly, Eddie Muphy and Colm O’Flaherty being introduced to see out the game. With space opening up and the game getting stretched Sam Colgan added a second point to his tally for the day, David O’Shaughnessy slotted a two pointer and Colm O’Flaherty finished to the net after some good work by Danny Neville down the right hand side and the game finished with a 14 point win for Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan who sit atop the group with four wins from four and will face off against Cappagh in 2 weeks time to decide who tops the group. County Under 16 Football Shield Semi Final:
ABK Desmonds 1-14 Belville Gaels 1-05
Our under 16 footballers booked their place in the under 16 County shield football final with a dominant display against Belville Gaels in Askeaton on Sunday morning.
Playing with the wind we started slowly and were lucky the Belville attack were in a wasteful mood as they butchered a few early chances. However with Gavin Rushe at centre back and Darragh O’Shaughnessy at midfield coming more in to the game we picked off the first four scores of the game with Brooklyn Delahunty landing two minors and Darragh O’Shaughnessy and Danny Anglim landing two fine points to give us a healthy 4 point lead. A fortuitous Belville goal had them right back in the game with twenty minutes played before Darragh O’Shaughnessy and Brooklyn Delahunty added points to send us in at half time leading by two points.
We started the second half in impressive fashion with Darragh O’Shaughnessy and Delahunty pointing before midfielder Cillian Murphy stormed in to the game firstly with a terrific individual goal which he soon followed up with two magical 2 pointers from well outside the scoring arc in to the town end. This put daylight between the sides and with Danny Murphy and Aaron Cregan fighting for everything in the full back line we never let Belville back in to the game and ran out 9 point winners courtesy of two late frees from Gavin Rushe and Darragh O’Shaughnessy.
We now look forward to a county shield final in the coming weeks. Today was this groups sixth game of the championship with a late goal by Galtee Gaels resulting in our only defeat of the season. With our under 16 hurlers out in the Championship Semi final next Saturday hopes are high that we can finish a great year so far with some silverware.
