Mungret/St Pauls GAA Club Notes:

A Historic Day for Mungret/St Pauls:
On Saturday, 20 September 2025, Mungret St. Paul’s GAA Club proudly welcomed a host of distinguished guests and supporters to mark the official opening of our new playing pitch, astro turf pitch, and ball wall at our club grounds.
We were honoured to be joined by Jarlath Burns, Uachtarán CLG; Tríona Murray, LGFA President; Brian Molloy, Camogie President; Mayor John Moran; Ministers Niall Collins and Patrick O’Donovan; local councillors; representatives of Munster and Limerick GAA, LGFA and Camogie; sponsors; and past and present club members. Their presence made the day even more special for our community.
This was a landmark occasion for our club – celebrating facilities that will inspire and serve generations of players, families, and supporters for years to come.
There was a real buzz around the grounds from early morning, with activities taking place across every surface. Excitement soared when Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns arrived by helicopter, taking in a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the club before joining the celebrations on the ground.
During a tour of the facilities, Jarlath met with our Senior Ladies Footballers, while at the Ball Wall, all three Presidents – Jarlath, Tríona, and Brian, were introduced to our Réaltai group, gamely joining in with hula hoops and a parachute game to the delight of players and parents alike.
The formal ceremony began with Donal Fitzgibbon as MC, guiding the order of speeches. Contributions were made by: Mayor John Moran, Patrick O’Donovan, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Niall Collins, Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Fintan Hynes, Club Chairperson, Seamus McNamara, Limerick GAA Chairman,
Tim Murphy, Munster GAA Council Chairman, Tríona Murray, LGFA President and Brian Molloy, Camogie President.
A special blessing of the pitches was then led by Canon O’Shea, assisted by Caitríona Rice, Mary Larkin, Kathleen Murphy, and Breandán Ó hAnnaigh with prayers.
Finally, Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns addressed the gathering before inviting Tríona and Brian to join him in officially opening our new facilities.
Before the day drew to a close, there was one final celebration to enjoy. Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns presented certificates to mark the golden anniversary of our 1975 Minor and Intermediate hurling teams, honouring their achievements and contribution to the club’s history. We were also delighted to introduce our All-Ireland Junior Ladies Football champions to Jarlath, Tríona, and Brian – a proud moment linking past and present successes – just as the rain began to threaten overhead. To commemorate the day the club shop sold a new jersey with the Dillon Quirke foundation on the front, this was quickly sold out but with such huge demand orders have been taken for additional jerseys. €5 from each jersey sold will be presented to the Dillion Quirke Foundation. Thank you to COBI Sports for designing these jerseys for us. Days like this don’t happen without extraordinary teamwork behind the scenes. From preparing the grounds, setting up, and providing food, to stewarding and ensuring everything ran smoothly, countless volunteers gave their time and energy to make the day a success. Mungret St. Paul’s GAA Club extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part – both those visible on the day and the many more who worked quietly in the background. Your efforts made this proud moment in our club’s history truly unforgettable.

Mungret St. Pauls 3:12 Cappagh 2:08
Well done to our Junior Ladies football team who played their second group game at home on Tuesday 9th September against a strong Cappagh team. Cappagh got off to a great start with a quick goal to put them in the lead. Mungret soon settled into the game scoring a goal and five points before half time. Cappagh lead 1-06 to 1-05 at half time but the Mungret ladies put in a very strong second half performance and finished the game ahead by 7 points. Well done to all players and management involved with the team. They have now finished top of their group and will play Old Mill at home on Saturday 20th September. All support is welcomed.
U12 Football:
Our U12 Footballers travelled to Ardfert on Saturday, 13 September 2025, to take part in the annual football tournament, which followed a familiar format to our own Pa O’Brien Tournament – two teams of 11-a-side from each club facing off, with the overall aggregate score deciding the winner.
From the outset, both Mungret St. Pauls teams showed determination and teamwork in what proved to be a testing day of football, with strong winds making conditions difficult. In the group stage, the boys recorded three excellent victories against hosts Ardfert, Rathmore, and Ballincollig, displaying a great mix of skill, spirit, and work rate.
Those wins set up a much-anticipated final against our near neighbours Monaleen, who had also topped their group. The final lived up to expectations, with both sides giving their all. Once again, the collective effort, discipline, and hard work of our players shone through, and Mungret St. Paul’s emerged as deserved winners. It was a fantastic day for the group, with every player making a big contribution across the games. The boys represented the club proudly, showing resilience and teamwork in tough, blustery conditions. Well done to all involved, and a big thank you to Ardfert GAA for their warm welcome and excellent organisation of the tournament.
U14 Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 5-9 Adare 4-6
On Monday, 15 September 2025, our U14 division 3 footballers welcomed Adare to Mungret for the Shield semi final. In front of a strong home support, the boys started brightly, working hard to gain an early foothold in the game. Some well-taken scores and strong defending gave Mungret St. Pauls a narrow lead at half time, but Adare kept themselves right in the contest with two fine goals of their own. The second half was an exciting, end-to-end battle. Both sides pushed forward with real intent, and goals proved crucial. Mungret St. Pauls showed great composure in attack, finishing five goals over the hour, while the defence stood tall under late Adare pressure. At the final whistle, Mungret St. Paul’s held a well-earned 5-9 to 4-6 victory, booking a place in the Shield Final. Every player played their part, with excellent work rate, teamwork, and determination evident right through the game.
Well done to the players and mentors on a fantastic performance – we look forward to the final!

A special word of Thank you to Newport for making the trip into Mungret.
Premier Minor Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-10 Oola 1-8
Mungret St. Pauls were crowned Premier Minor Football Champions on a crisp Wednesday evening under the Knocklong floodlights, edging out Oola by two points in a tense and hard-fought final. Backed by a superb travelling support, the Mungret St. Pauls players showed heart, resilience, and composure to deliver silverware on one of the club’s biggest nights of the year. The opening stages belonged to Oola, who settled quicker into the contest. By the first quarter they had registered three unanswered points from play, while Mungret St. Pauls struggled to find their range in front of goal. It wasn’t until the 16th minute that Mungret St. Pauls finally opened their account, a well-taken point from play giving the large travelling support something to cheer. Oola responded with two further scores – one from play and one from a free – to stretch their advantage to four (0-5 to 0-1). However, the closing minutes of the half belonged to Mungret St. Pauls. Showing determination and patience, they landed three consecutive frees before the break to cut the deficit to a single point. At half-time, Oola led narrowly by 0-5 to 0-4, but Mungret St.Pauls had momentum on their side. Mungret St. Pauls came out for the second half with renewed intensity. A point from play in the 6th minute levelled the contest before the decisive moment arrived just two minutes later. A slick move cut open the Oola defence and was finished emphatically to the net, sending the Mungret St. Pauls crowd into raptures as their side took the lead for the first time, 1-5 to 0-5. Oola responded with a free, but Mungret St. Pauls continued to press. A free followed by another excellent point from play pushed Mungret St. Pauls four clear by the 12th minute. Oola briefly threatened a comeback with a brace of points, including a superb two pointer, but Mungret St. Pauls again showed composure. Three more points stretched the lead back out to five (1-10 to 0-8) as Mungret St. Pauls controlled possession and worked tirelessly in defence to keep Oola at bay. With time running out, Oola finally broke through the Mungret St. Pauls rearguard and hit the back of the net, closing the gap to just two points. But the final whistle followed soon after, sparking wild celebrations among the Mungret St. Pauls players, management, and supporters. This was a performance built on grit, patience, and belief. After a sluggish start, Mungret St. Pauls grew into the contest, took their chances when they came, and showed maturity beyond their years to manage the closing stages.
Congratulations to Conor O’Longaigh who was awarded the Man of the Match award on the night receiving a Mike O’Connell Menswear voucher also. The Premier minor football trophy was presented to Conor from Wayne Fitzgerald, Chairperson of Limerick Football. Celebrations continued back in the Community Centre that night with Thanks to Helen McKeogh for looking after everyone.
U16 Football:
Mungret/St. Pauls U16 division 3 footballers gave their all in tough conditions at home on Sunday morning, 21 September 2025 when they faced a very strong ABK Desmonds side in the quarter final. From the outset, it was clear that the visitors carried a real attacking threat, but our players never let their heads drop and kept battling right to the final whistle.
The game began at a frantic pace with ABK Desmonds striking early, but Mungret St. Pauls steadied themselves and worked their way into the contest. Two well-taken frees in the first half showed great composure under pressure, and the defensive effort throughout was immense against constant waves of attack. At half time, the lads regrouped.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with ABK Desmonds continuing to press forward. Mungret St. Pauls responded bravely, creating scoring chances of their own and converting with a fine point from play midway through the half. Further scores followed – including another from play and a confidently struck free. While the result ultimately didn’t go our way, the character and determination shown by this young team was outstanding. Every player worked tirelessly, chasing, tackling, and never giving up against a physically strong opposition. This group can be proud of their performance and the progress they’ve made through the season. With more experience and continued commitment, these players have a bright future ahead when they play in the Division 1 group next year.
Condolences:
Our deepest sympathies to the Moroney family and friends on the passing of Ger, a passed player of Mungret St. Pauls. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
