Athea GAA Club Notes:
2025 Premier Junior A Championship:
As we approach Round 2 of this competition let’s take a look at the two groups.
This year’s teams in Group 1 are Monagea, Mungret St. Pauls-B, Fr. Caseys-B, Mountcollins, Ballybrown and ourselves.
Group 2 is made up of, Croom, Castlemahon, Ahane, Granagh Ballingarry, Feenagh Kilmeedy and Kilteely Dromkeen
To advance to the Quarter-final Stage we will need to pick up five or six points. We need ot regain ground after the Mungret St. Pauls match so we will have to be efficient in the remaining games. This Friday we meet Ballybrown and will be expected to win this one. We meet Mountcollins on September 4th and will hope that this one goes our way. On September 25th we meet Fr. Caseys-B’s which will be a very good indication of where we are this year. Our last group match is on October 9th against Monagea.
We know each of the teams well this year and if we can overcome the slip up in Round 1 by finding some form then we should be in with a chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
The Teams in Group 2 look that bit stronger. Castlemahon are back at Premier Junior having dropped down from Intermediate. Ahane were promoted form Junior A last year and will be expected more success this year. Croom are always competitive and Kilteely Dromkeen will bring East Limerick doggedness. The other two Granagh Ballingarry and Feenagh Kilmeedy will be juggling hurling so it is hard to know what to expect.
Anyway we have over two months of matches before the knockout stages so put these dates in the diary. Good support at matches does translate onto the pitch and can often make the difference in tight matches.

Girls U16 championship:
Athea 4.9 Oola 7.13
Hard luck to our u16’s who put up a gallant effort against a strong Oola side. Some excellent play was on show from both sides in a high scoring affair.
Intermediate championship Round 1:
Athea 1.9 Monaleen 4.7
Played in poor conditions on Sunday evening our ladies got off to the worst possible start when they seeded a goal in the first few minutes. Athea regained their composure and worked hard to bring it back level to 1.1 a piece half way through the first half. Despite having a lot of possession, they could not convert this into scores and against the run of play Monaleen scored two killer blows before the break to leave it 1.3 to 4.1. The girls started well in the second half but points were not enough to make up the first half deficit and Monaleen ran out winners 4.7 to 1.9. The girls will regroup to meet Adare in the next round. Team Sarah O’ Connor, Evie Doody, Sinead Hunt, Isabelle Barrett, Grace Hunt, Rebekah Daly, Michelle Curtain, Rebecca Collins, Stephanie Woulfe, Maeve Murphy, Aoife Curtain, Emma Scanlon Noelle Curtain Moly hunt, Aoife O’ Connor, Mary Ita Casey, Molly Hunt, Grace White.

Another fantastic performance this morning from our hurlers. Teamwork, tackling, defending, skill and scoring was a joy to see. Thank you to all the parents for bringing the children. A huge thank you to the coaches who are making this so enjoyable. It took three clubs to try and match our numbers this morning. 27 from Athea and 31 total from the other three clubs. Thats an incredible achievement
