In difficult, wet and windy conditions at Ballingarry on Friday evening Murroe-Boher recorded a thrilling 4 point, 1-19 to 1-15 victory over unlucky Granagh-Ballingarry after extra time to win the inaugural Granagh-Ballingarry Denny Ahern Memorial Cup Junior B Hurling Tournament Final in front of a good crowd who gave great support to their sides.
The inaugural Denny Ahern Memorial Cup Final was a thrilling 36 score contest played on an excellent pitch in difficult wet and windy conditions with Billy Phillips of Tournafulla in charge.
Granagh-Ballingarry with the wind at their backs made all the early running with a trio of white flags in the opening 8 minutes courtesy of Pat Carroll, free, Jack Hartnett play and Colm Noonan 65 before David Hickey opened the visitors’ account, when he finished past Granagh-Ballingarry keeper John O’Grady on 9 minutes and he followed this up with a white flag from open play a minute later to leave one between the sides Murroe-Boher 1-1, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-3 on 10 minutes. White flags were traded, Jack Mulqueen from open play on 11 minutes and Eoghan Tuohy from a placed ball on 12 minutes before a pair of white flags for the home side through Owen Lynch from open play on 13 minutes and Pat Carroll from aplaced ball two minute s later to leave the Granagh-Ballingarry boys one ahead 0-6 to 1-2 at the end of the first quarter. A pair of white flags for Murroe-Boher through Jack Casey on 16 minutes and Joe Hayes a minute later were cancelled out by Colm Noonan from a 65 on 19 minutes and Jim O’Keeffe a minute later to leave the Granagh-Ballingarry boys one ahead 0-8 to 1-4 on 20 minutes. Both sides were guilty of inaccurate striking in the next four minutes before a pair of white flags from open play courtesy of Joe Shanahan on 25 minutes and Eoghan Tuohy 2 minutes later to leave Murroe-Boher one ahead 1-6 to 0-8 on 27 minutes Granagh-Ballingarry No. 13 Jack Hartnett made the sides level for the fifth time, when he split the uprights from open play on 28 minutes before Jack O’Donoghue finished past Murroe-Boher keeper Evan Duffy on 30 minutes to send Granagh-Ballingarry in at the interval leading by three 1-9 to 1-6.
The opening 8 minutes after the interval were close and exciting with white flags traded by Jack Casey play and Pat Carroll free, Pat Carroll play and David Hickey play before a pair of white flags for Granagh-Ballingarry courtesy of sub Philip Byrnes from open play on 42 minutes and Owen Lynch from a placed ball 3 minutes later to extend the black and greens’ advantage to five, 1-13 to 1-8 at the end of the third quarter. The Murroe-Boher boys far from being overawed had six unanswered white flags in a 12 minute spell through David Hickey play on 46 minutes, Eoghan Tuohy 3 play on 49minutes and frees on 52 and 54 minutes and David Hickey three minutes later to leave the sides level for the sixth time at 1-13 each on 57 minutes. Wides were exchanged before white flags were traded by David Hickey from open play on 59 minutes and Colm Noonan from a 65 one minute into added time to leave the sides level for the seventh time at 1-14each at the final whistle to take this thrilling memorial cup final to extra time. Pat Carroll and Eoghan Tuohy traded white flags from placed balls to leave the sides level for the eight time at the end of the first period of five minutes of extra time at 1-15 each. The Murroe-Boher boys dominated the second period of five minutes of extra time with four unanswered white flags from open play through Eoghan Tuohy, David Hickey, Cathal Sheridan and David Hickey to bring his tally for the game to 1-6 from open play. At the final whistle at the end of extra time the Murroe-Boher boys were four point 1-19 to 1-15 of the inaugural Granagh-Ballingarry Denny Ahern Memorial Cup Junior Hurling Tournament. The Murroe-Boher team were delighted to be the first winners of the memorial cup and the Granagh-Ballingarry boys subdued to have lost by 4 points in extra time but were very sporting in defeat and congratulated the Murroe-Boher boys on the great win and wished them the best of luck in the West Championship. Both sides must be complimented on a thrilling 36 score contest played in such difficult wet conditions. Murroe-Boher scored 1-7 from play and 0-6 from frees and 0-2 from 65.

Presentation:
After the game Granagh-Ballingarry secretary/PRO John Lynch paid tribute to the late Denny Allen for the great work he did for the club down through the years, congratulated Murroe-Boher on winning the Memorial Cup. He praised Granagh-Ballingarry for their part in a thrilling final and wished both teams the best of luck in West and East Junior B Hurling Championship. He complimented referee Billy Phillips and his officials Paddy Hennessy and company for having everything in top class order, Claire Enright for taking photos, Andrew Holmes and Jim Roche for their help with the bucket collection, Peggy Ryan, a sister of Dinny Ahern, presented the Memorial Cup to winning captain Eoghan Tuohy to the joy of the Murroe-Boher supporters Eoghan thanked the Granagh-Ballingarry club for the invitation to play in the Memorial Cup final. He thanked the team management and referee Billy Phillips and his officials. He complimented Granagh-Ballingarry and gave them three cheers.
Man of the match:
The man of the match award was presented to David Hickey of Murroe-Boher who finished with a personal tally of 1-4 from open play, by Carmel Ryan, Denny’s Ahern’s niece.
Donations to Field Development Fund:
The total proceeds of the Denny Ahern Memorial Cup Hurling Final in aid of the Granagh-Ballingarry New Field Development Fund comes to 255.45. Thank you to all for your support and generosity for the Memorial Cup Final and the new Field Development Fund.
29th Dunworth Cup Final in aid of New Field Development Final:
All roads lead to Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Club grounds in Ballingarry on Sunday 13th July at 6pm for the clash of Granagh/Ballingarry and 2023 All Ireland Club Junior hurling champions Ballygiblin from North Cork in the 29th final of the Granagh/Ballingarry Intermediate Hurling Tournament for the Dunworth Cup and a set of engraved medals. Granagh/Ballingarry will be seeking their 10th cup title, a first since 2018 with the Cork intermediate side Ballygiblin hoping to inscribe their name on the base of the cup for the first time and become the second North Cork side since Ballyhea in 2021 to win the tournament.
All proceeds of a bucket collection at the final will go to the new Field Development Fund.

At sunny Dromcollogher on Wednesday evening a well taken point from a 40 metre placed ball by Colin Burke one minute into added time paved the way for a thrilling 5-10 to 4-13 draw for Dromcollogher-Broadford with Granagh-Ballingarry in the opening group 2 game in the County Minor C Hurling Championship.
A good crowd turned out to watch this opening Group 2 County Minor C Hurling Championship tie between two fine sporting teams played on an excellent pitch with Kieran Flaherty of Monaleen in charge.
Granagh-Ballingarry with the wind at their backs made all the early running with a second minute goal by their No. 14 Darragh O’Donoghue before white flags were traded by Granagh-Ballingarry No. 8 Declan Dunworth from a placed ball on 5 minutes and Dromcollogher-Broadford No. 10 Colin Burke two minutes later to leave the visitors ahead 1-1 to 0-1 on 7 minutes. A pair of white flags for Dromcollogher-Broadford from open play courtesy of Ollie Broderick on 9 minutes and Colin Burke on 11 minutes were cancelled out by Declan Dunworth from a placed ball on 12 minutes and Tom Horgan from open play a minute later to leave the boys in black and green three ahead again, 1-3 to 0-3 on 13 minutes. A couple of wides were exchanged. Declan Dunworth split the uprights from a pair of placed balls on 15 and 18 minutes before John Lenihan finished to the back of the Granagh-Ballingarry net a minute later to reduce the deficit to two, Granagh-Ballingarry 1-5, Dromcollogher-Broadford 1-3 on 19 minutes. The next 8 minutes were close and exciting with white flags traded by Gavin Farrell play on 20 minutes and Declan Dunworth free on 23 minutes before John Lenihan raised a green flag from a penalty for the home side two minutes later to put them ahead for the first time in this exciting contest by one, 2-4 to 1-6 on 26 minutes. Declan Dunworth made the sides level for the for the first time when he split the uprights from a placed ball on 26 minutes before Ollie Broderick raised the home side’s third green flag a minute later to leave three between the sides, Dromcollogher-Broadford 3-4, Granagh-Ballingarry 1-7 on 27 minutes. Darragh O’Donoughue won a point back from open play for the visitors on 28 minutes before John Lenihan raised his third green flag of this opening half for the Dromcollogher-Broadford boys on 30 minutes to send them in at the interval leading by five, 4-4 to 1-8. The Dromcollogher boys with the wind at their backs dominated the opening 6 minutes after the interval with a pair of white flags from open play courtesy of Colin Burke and John Lenihan followed up by a cracking Gavin Farrell green flag to extend their advantage to ten, Dromcollogher-Broadford 5-6, Granagh-Ballingarry 1-8 on 36 minutes. The Granagh-Ballingarry boys far from being overawed dominated the next 17 minutes with 2-4 through Declan Dunworth,0-3, 2 frees, Den Daly 0-1 play and a green flag each by Darragh O’Donoghue and Tom Horgan to leave the sides level for the second time Granagh-Ballingarry 3-12, Dromcollogher-Broadford 5-6 on 53 minutes. Jack Noonan put the home side one ahead when he split the uprights from open play 2 minutes later before Tom Horgan raised his second and the Granagh-Ballingarry boys fourth green flag on 56 minutes to leave the visitors two ahead, 4-12 to 5-7. White flags were traded from placed balls by Colin Burke on 57 minutes and Declan Dunworth on 58 minutes before Colin Burke landed a pair of white flags from placed balls for the home side on 59 and 61 minutes to leave the sides level for the third time Dromcollogher-Broadford 5-10, Granagh-Ballingarry 4-13 at the final whistle. Tailteann Cup Senior Football Final Tickets:
Limerick will play Kildare in the Tailteann Cup Senior Football Final on Saturday 12th July in Croke Park at 2.30pm. With a capacity of €81,000 tickets supply will be plentiful and anyone who wishes to attend the game will be able to do so as it will be a curtain-raiser to the first of the All Ireland Senior Football Championship semi-final will be able to do so as the games will not be a sell-out. Tickets will go on public sale on this Monday 30th June via Ticketmaster and selected SuperValu and Centra outlets. Thank you for your understanding in this matter and hopefully there will be a big travelling support from Granagh/Ballingarry on the day to support the boys in green and white.

There was no winner of the €10,800 jackpot in the Granagh/Ballingarry GAA club lottery draw held on Saturday 5th July in Condron’s Bar, Ballingarry. The numbers drawn were 10, 11, 15 and 16.
