Pallasgreen GAA Club Notes:
Junior B County Final:
It was another Saturday evening of drama on the hurling pitch as Palllas and Staker Wallace played out a tension filled and exciting League final in Kilmallock last Saturday night. It was almost heading to penalties only for a bewildering refereeing decision to disallow a Pallas goal right at the final whistle. After level scores in normal time 1-14 each, the game went into extra time and the South side just prevailed on a scoreline of 3-17 to 2-17. Sympathies:
The club was saddened by the recent passing of one of its great stalwarts in John English. He was held with deep respect and affection within Pallasgreen GAA Club. A man of immense dedication and passion, John was at the heart of many proud moments during the 1950s and 60s, contributing significantly to County title victories in both football and hurling. He was on the 1955 junior hurling team beaten in the county final by a fine Patrickswell side. The following year he had success when Pallas won the 1956 County Junior football final defeating St Patrick’s. 1957 was another great year for the club when Pallas reached the senior football final only to be beaten by Treaty Sarsfield’s after a replay. 1958 was proud moment for John and the club when they won the county junior hurling final after a great tussle with Granagh in Kilmallock. Some say this victory was the foundation for the clubs many successes later on. John was also a member of team that took a star studded Dromcollogher side to a replay in the 1963 junior hurling final in Kilmallock, but the western side took the honours on a 3-9 to 3-3 scoreline. In between he had accumulated numerous east titles in football and hurling. His commitment on the field was matched only by the admiration and friendship he inspired off it. John was not just a talented athlete, but a truly likeable and respected figure both among his teammates and throughout the wider community. His good humour, kindness, and unwavering club spirit made him a cherished presence in all who knew him. Though he had long since settled in Birr, Co. Offaly, John’s heart never left Pallasgreen or his beloved Reask. Just last year, he made the journey home to attend an ex-players gathering in the local community centre. It was a morning filled with memories, camaraderie, and pride, especially when John got the chance to hold the Liam MacCarthy Cup, a symbol of Limerick’s modern-day success that brought him great joy. So moved was he by the occasion that he penned a few lines of a poem to mark it. true to the thoughtful and expressive man he was.
“An Invite to Pallas gave me much joy
To meet some of the players I played with as a boy.
While the legs might be wobbly, the mind is still sound,
Like the Pallas teams of old, they always stood their ground.
The thrill it gave me to handle the MacCarthy Cup I won’t tell a lie”.
John’s legacy will live on in the stories told in dressing rooms, at the sidelines, and among neighbours who remember his grace, strength, and sincerity. The Pallasgreen GAA Club, and all who knew him, will hold him fondly in their hearts. Sympathies to his wife Angela, sons Peter and Seán, son in law, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
