At sunny Fedamore on Sunday eveningGranagh-Ballingarry recorded an impressive nine point, 4-17 to 3-11 victory over gallant Cois Laoi Gaels (Effin Staker Wallace) to claim their first ever County U-17 hurling championship title.
The final was played on an excellent pitch in front of a good crowd who gave great support to their sides with Kevin O’Brien of Patrickswell in charge. He did an excellent job explaining any decisions made to both teams, which definitely contributed to the 35 score game that developed. Granagh-Ballingarry managed by Limerick Masters player Noel Noonan flew out of the blocks and played their best hurling of the year in the opening 20 minutes, flew into a six point 0-11 to 0-5 lead, but a strong finish to the half by a very capable Cois Laoi Gaels side, the deficit was reduced to 2 points, 0-11 to 1-6 at the interval.
The boys in black and green like the opening half started the second half strong and quickly extended their advantage to 6 points again, and ever time Cois Laoi Gaels rallied with a score to reduce the deficit. The Granagh-Ballingarry boys found the scores to keep them at bay for an impressive 9 point, 4-17 to 3-11 victory at the final whistle to claim the club’s first ever County U-17 hurling championship title. Huge congratulations to this great bunch of kids, who thoroughly deserved this county title after persevering for many years, and thanks also to the parents who never failed to support them home and away. Congratulations to Noel Noonan on keeping the show on the road with this group as his partner Donal O’Grady has been busy as manager of the Limerick minor hurlers this year. Thanks to all at the Rock Bar, Granagh, for putting on finger food afterwards for the celebrations. After the game County Bord na nOg chairperson Denis Carroll presented the County U17 hurling division 4 shield to winning captain Darragh O’Donoghue to the delight of the Granagh-Ballingarry supporters.
