Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan GAA Club Notes:
West Junior A Hurling League:
Askeaton-Ballysteen-Kilcornan 0-16 Dromcollogher/Broadford 0-09
Our junior A Hurlers had a good win at a cold Askeaton last Tuesday night. Playing with a strong wind in the first half we led 9 points to 2 at half time thanks to the accuracy of Matthew Keaveney from play and from placed balls aswell as nice scores from Tadgh O’Brien and Sean Whelan. Despite playing against the elements in the second half the result was never in doubt as we kept the scoreboard ticking thanks to a fine early strike from Fiachra Butler which was followed up by an excellent point from Mark Ranahan on the turn in to the town end. Further white flags from wing back Evan Costello, Sean Whelan and the impressive Senan O’Brien wrapped up a comfortable win. Team and scorers Cathal Guerin, John Fitzsimons, Alan McGrath, Cathal Moran, Evan Costello 0-1, Eoin Condon, Matthew O’Meara, Matthew Keaveney 0-6, Colm O’Connell, Sean Whelan 0-2, Senan O Brien 0-3, Niall Barry, Fiachra Butler 0-2, Tadgh O’Brien 0-1, Paul Maher.Subs used Conor Purcell, Declan Guerin, Luke Kelly, Mark Ranahan 0-1, Cormac McMahon.

Our under 13 hurlers got their championship campaign off to the perfect start with a 4 point win over Mungret St Pauls in Mungret on Thursday night. We led at half time 2-03 to 0-03 points thanks to goals from Jack Fitzgibbon and Darragh Whelan along with two points from Danny Anglim and a fine free from Niall Sheehy. Mungret fought back in the second half but further points from Michael O’Shaughnessy, Jack Fitzgibbon and 1-02 from Danny Anglim sealed the points. Great effort from all 20 players who togged out. West Junior B Football League Semi Final:
Askeaton-Ballysteen-Kilcornan 0-14 Athea 3-08
Our junior b’s went down to a disappointing 3 point defeat to Athea last Thursday night in Glin in the league semi final. Unfortunately, the concession of 3 goals was to prove costly. Half back Evan Costelloe impressed with 4 points from play. Attention now turns to the championship for our B team. Teams and scorers Brian Neville, Matthew Keaveney, John Fitzsimons, Luke Kelly, Evan Costello 0-4, Callum Daly, Shane Hanrahan, John McCarthy, Danny O Flaherty, Tomas Sheahan 0-5 (2f 1 x 2pt), Fiachra Butler White 0-1, John Blackwell, Colm O’Flaherty 0-1, Mark Ranahan 0-2, Colm O Connell. Subs used Sean Whelan 0-1, Niall Barry, Conor McNamara, Maurice Somers.
Feile na nGael Hurling:
Our under 15 hurlers gave a very good account of themselves at the Feile na Gael today qualifying for the quarter final before exiting the competition at the hands of a strong Monagea team.
We began the day unlucky to lose out to St Kierans on a scoreline of 1-02 to 0-07 with Cathal Daly accounting for all our scores. Next up were Newcastle West where we gave our best performance of the day scoring 6 unanswered points in the second half to win on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-5.
We then made the journey from Glin to Athea knowing a win versus Athea would qualify us for the quarter final. The lads continued from where they left off against Newcastle West and ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-08 to 1-01 with Kieran Hanley smashing home two crucial goals.
Unfortunately, Monagea proved too strong for us in the quarter final in Templeglantine winning on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-04.
Overall a positive days hurling for the lads with every player giving 100% and a continued improvement in performance evident. Team and scorers Darrgh Moran, Donnacha O Gorman, Peter Hoda, Frank Murphy, Eoin McNamara, Ryan O Donoghue, Rian Kelly, Aaron Cregan 0-01, Cathal Daly 1-12, Darragh O Shaughnessy 0-07, Tom Harty, Hugh Sheehy, Rory Moran 0-01, Harry O Toole 0-01, Kieran Hanley 2-00, Danny Anglim, John O Brien 0-01, Callum Dalton, Cian Byrnes 0-01, Paudie Ryan.
