West Senior Football League:
Fr. Caseys 1-09 St. Kierans 2-15
New season and new rules for the senior team as the 2025 season kicked off Saturday in coolcappagh against St. Kierans. Playing against the elements in the first half it was a struggle for a youthful Fr. Casey’s team to get a foot hold in the game. The Ardagh men got off to the better start with a brace of points when young Evan O’Connor scored his first senior point for Fr Casey’s. That was as good as it got for the Abbeyfeale men as the next 20 minutes was dominated by St. Kierans as they capitalised on a couple of mistakes, including an infringement for failing to keep three up, and raced into a lead that in the end was the winning of the game. 2-10 to 0-1 at the short whistle.
After some harsh words at half time the fealesiders came out with more gusto and brought themselves back into the game. Points by Matthew O’Connor, Dan Daly and two more from Evan O’Connor had the wind in the sails of the men in blue and white. When Martin Scannell and Billy Quirke got the game down to 6 points from the half time deficit of 15 points it felt like it could have been a comeback for the ages. St. Kierans responded though with a few scores that seemed to knock the comeback on the head, until the ageless Martin Scannell found the back of the net to put it into the melting pot in the final quarter of the game. Unfortunately, a sole Kieran Roche point was all that was registered as the legs ran out on soft ground and the first game of the season. St. Kierans in the end running out deserved winners 2-15 to 1-9. Great to see a team with such a blend of youth and experience with 7 of last year’s winning minor team playing a big part mixed in with the likes of David Ward, Martin Scannell and Donagh Kelly who are all drinking from the fountain of youth and as fresh as ever. The seniors will be hoping to get a victory in round 2 against Adare in the Inch.
Limerick Footballers:
Well done to the Limerick Senior Footballers who made it three league victories in a row with a very impressive 2-21 to 3-08 home win over Tipperary last Saturday evening in Mick Neville Park. With two games to play against Wicklow and Waterford, the chance of promotion is firmly now in their own hands. Mark McCarthy started at corner back, Fiachra Cotter at wing back with Diarmuid Buckley and Rory O’Brien also involved, it is great to see such a strong Fr. Caseys presence on this team.
