Fr Caseys GAA Club Notes:

Senior County Quarter-Final:
Fr. Caseys 3-12 Na Piarsaigh 1-06
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers are just sixty minutes away from their first county final since 2009 after another high scoring victory, this time defeating Na Piarsaigh in the newly upgraded Bog Garden last Saturday.
Fr. Caseys kicked the opening two points of the game but after ten minutes Na Piarsaigh struck for goal to regain the lead. The first half would see as many green flags as white flags with Fr. Caseys gaining the most. Three Fr. Caseys goals in a ten minute spell turned this contest on its head and gave the Abbeyfeale men an advantage they never would surrender. First David Ward slotted home after being setup by Adrian Enright then Eliah Riordan held his nerve to convert from the penalty spot while Adrian Enright struck for the third after great work by Rory O’Brien. The scores now at 3-02 to 1-00 both sides would trade points before the half time break to leave a margin of eight points between the teams.
Five points in the third quarter for Fr. Caseys with Na Piarsaigh scoring one in return put further daylight between the teams and the contest was now well and truly over. In total Fr. Caseys kicked nine second half points to capture a well-deserved twelve point victory. The first half goals had rattled their city rivals and with confidence up Fr. Caseys never looked back. In total we had eight different scorers on an evening where the team were without the services of captain Daniel Daly through injury. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 3-12, Na Piarsaigh 1-06.
Eoin Joy and Shane Kelly will be very pleased with the form of this team to date but we now enter the business end of the season. Fr. Caseys will be more than aware that a county final appearance has been a long time coming and to reach that milestone they will have to overcome a young and fearless Mungret side that are on a high since promotion last year. On the other side county champions Newcastle West will face Adare in what also promises to be a classic encounter. There is a lot of football still to play in the county senior championship but Fr. Caseys are definitely in the mix and the next few weeks of preparation before the semi-final is crucial. The date, time and venue for the Mungret game has yet to be released
Junior A County Quarter-Final:
Fr. Caseys 4-07 Athea 4-10
Fr. Caseys Junior A Footballers bowed out of the county championship last Thursday night in Mountcollins after a heart aching penalty shootout defeat to neighbours Athea. The opening quarter was dominated by Fr. Caseys and in hindsight this was the period they should have taken more scores and widened the margin between the teams. An early point from Eoin Joy started the scoring then Jamie Dore burst through from the right wing and with only the keeper to beat he made no mistake, despatching the ball to the net. Athea pulled one back but Adam Murphy fresh from his county minor heroics and Darren Keane returning from Australia both grabbed well taken points to stretch the margin to five points. After fifteen minutes it looked like there was only one team in this game with Athea struggling to get out of their own half but credit to them they battled back and two points in a five minute spell left a goal between the sides. The teams would trade points before the break with Eoin Joy again on target for Fr. Caseys. The half time score was 1-04 to 0-04.
Athea made a promising start to the second period and ten minutes later the teams were level after three unanswered points. A free from Cormac Roche put Fr. Caseys back in front after our goalkeeper Kevin Lane had made a fine save at the other end. A well struck free from Athea with five minutes remaining levelled the scores once more and this would be the final score of the half. With nothing to separate the sides after sixty minutes extra time would now be required.
A well taken Padraig McEnery free and another Eoin Joy point with Athea scoring once in return would leave Fr. Caseys with a 1-07 to 0-09 lead at half time in extra time. In the second period of extra time there would be only one point scored and unfortunately this fell to Athea which meant that penalties would be needed to decide the game. The score now reading 1-07 to 0-10.
Our first penalty was missed by Cormac Roche while the Athea wing back slotted home. Next up was Conor Mullane who made no mistake but Atheas corner forward was also successful. When Cathal McCoy missed the third spot-kick the omens were not good but thankfully the Athea full back blazed wide and there was hope again. The fourth round of kicks were both successful with Matthew O’Connor converting for Fr. Caseys. When Padraig McEnery scored the fifth the pressure was on the Athea number fourteen but he held his nerve to secure a 4-3 penalty win.
In what was a terrible night of rain both teams threated the large crowd to a highly entertaining game of football. We can be very proud of the efforts from the team and wish Athea the best in the remainder of the competition. Many of this team have an Under 21 championship to look forward to while others may still have an impact on the senior championship. Well done to Joseph O’Flaherty and John Boyle for managing this team and no doubt they will be back stronger next year.
